MOJO GOES TO RADIO-ONE AND MOVES TO 100.3

The other piece that needs work is the programming. Signal is nothing without content. The music is generally good, but some of those liners... just... don't... make... sense. I also don't see why there isn't some kind of on-air effort put into differentiating the station from WUBE, but that's a personal preference.

I think Star is quite different. The music may be similar...but tell me this..

What do Ken and Kitty & Bill and Amanda have in common? I've never heard Bill say P*ssy on the air. I have heard Ken say it.. and maybe even Kitty.

Imaging? Star is running a sweep that says "Put This in your pipe and smoke it, 96-5 The Star." B wouldn't even touch that. Sounds different enough to me. Conveys the younger/hipper sound if you ask me.

What kind of on-air effort would you suggest? Verbal bashing? Saying "we're the fun country station?" Just because you SAY you're different, doesn't mean you are. It's how you execute it.

I agree that the Star is quite different. I should have been more specific.

The morning shows, well, that's no contest. Bill and Amanda are far more reserved for the most part, whereas Ken and Kitty seem to have a lot more energy (and fun). On any given morning, you can tune in to Ken and Kitty and listen to them go at each other. Some people like that, some don't.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it? Why am I telling my listener to do that? There's also a bit that runs saying "right now we're gonna play a little Xbox 360" followed by several seconds of electronic noises. What does that have to do with a 25-50 female (their demo)? If anything, Star's target listener has a boyfriend or husband that probably plays too many games, so why remind them of it? My point here is, hip and young is great but it also needs to appeal to the target listener or it's not good use of air time.

I wasn't suggesting verbal bashing for the on-air effort. You don't have to bash the competition to talk yourself up, and in fact I think that's usually a bad idea. People don't like pissing matches. I think we agree that the "different" part is already there, so why not play up those strengths? Taking a page from the recently departed Mojo, here's a suggestion: "You know that feeling you get when you find twenty bucks in your pocket? Listen to the Star and you'll feel like that all day long." Strong, non-destructive imaging and positioning is part of the execution.

Cumulus sold to Radio One for among other reasons, the lack of desire for a head-to-head with Radio One.

I guess I’m not getting it. MOJO is well established, getting good numbers, and is on a great signal. Why would Cumulus be unwilling to compete with an upstart Urban AC on a weaker stick? It seems like they’re giving up on a successful product.

Another question. The story is being reported that Radio One negotiated this with Susquehanna. If so, is it possible that the $5 million offered by Radio One was too tempting to pass up before unloading everything to Cumulus? But then how would that affect the terms of the sale? But Cumulus is apparently OK with this.

Why do I get this feeling that Radio One wants to be the only Urban player in town and everyone else is willing to go along with that?

I get the feeling Cumulus doesn't like Oldies formats in general. They were one of the top billers in the market. It will take awhile to make the kind of money again on whatever the new format will be.
