More AM daytime DXing at the Gulf - Finally got KTRH Houston with an ID!

I went back to the gulf to do some more daytime AM DXing and it was sure worth it!
I always was certain KTRH from Houston was one of the stations I heard on 740 but never could hear an ID. Today was my lucky day because one of the three stations I always get here on 740, the Spanish station, was off the air.

That left WYGM Orlando and the other mystery station I always thought had to be KTRH.

So here it is, finally an official ID. Listen at about 10 to 11 seconds in to the video where there's a lull in talking on WYGM and you can here the ID KTRH!
This is my best daytime AM dxing catch ever with an official ID -775 miles!

The first place I set up was a shaded picnic area but I had to leave for another location because I was getting bitten by gnats but not before
I got WSHO, only a 1 kw station from New Orleans with an official ID!

Once again, I had to get a clip of 790 AM because the frequency is so loaded up with stations compared to where I live inland in Tampa.

Still no ID but I have to think KBME from Houston was one of these stations.

Here's what I got on 1070. No actual ID but I think the talk station in the background of the religious one was most likely KNTH from Houston.

Although I didn't get as many stations as I thought, mainly due to interference from locals, I'd say the day was a success.

All right, I think you might have heard KBME. But it also sounded like there were time clicks and Morse code in the first few seconds. What's up with that?

@jd: That's Radio Reloj from Cuba. The ticks, and the "RR" in Morse code each and every minute, make it easy to ID. R Reloj is the official time station in Cuba as well.

@gar: Was that DXing from, um, a certain island? hint hint

I got the radio out after reading your post and right now, all I can hear on both frequencies is some Spanish speaking station.

During the winter though, I've heard a pretty consistent signal at night of 1100 WTAM.

It goes to show how this time of year isn't the best for nighttime AM reception.

Ya dun it gar. Persistence pays off.!!! I've gotten the religious station on 1030 from Corpus at my QTH about 90 mi S of y'all in Englewood FL during the day(what a waste of air space) but NEVER Houston. Were those gnats, skeeters, or love bugs? I've played golf outside with the gnats and love bugs in summer in FLA near the gulf but I do draw the line with the skeeters.
Did you take a shot at 1600 from Golden Meadow LA or was the Key West 1600 dominant?

Okay, I didn't remember they had one on 790. The one I get most often is on 570 underneath KLIF Dallas.

@vibe: From Cape San Blas south of Tallahassee, KLEB 1600 (Golden Meadow) & WKWF were battling it out. So I suppose it's possible from west of Tampa, as long as 1590 St Pete Beach can be nulled.

1030 sounded the same with that Spanish station on top of what was probably KCTA. Do you know where that Spanish station is from?

Cd had mentioned that there are picnic cabanas on Honeymoon Island and I never knew about them because they are out of the way of the main area. So I found one to set my stuff up and it looked perfect.

I was there for not even 10 minutes and I noticed my legs were itching. There were these tiny as can be bugs biting me and I suddenly noticed I had all these little red spots covering my legs. It freaked me out.

I called the park's info number and the person said not to worry. They are called sand gnats and they are most common where there is no breeze. I then set my stuff up on the deck of the rec center which fortunately was empty that time of the week. Actually, two people who came up there to use the restrooms asked me what I was doing and I explained how the Gulf brings in all kinds of stations you'd never imagine could be heard if you didn't know how AM signals work.

One guy was really interested and I showed him WWL from New Orleans. He said he had to tell his friends he was with about that and that they probably won't believe him.
For some reason, 1600 from Golden Meadow wasn't on my list. Many of the stations on that list I posted in the other thread that I wanted to check out had at least 2 or 3 stations on the frequencies but they were all too faint to possibly make out.

When I lived in League City I actually heard RR on 790 more often. I remember specifically I heard the ticks underneath Charlie Pallilo's show a few times in the winter of 2008-09, and that was right in the heart of their pattern down 45 halfway from Houston to Galveston.

Honeymoon Island is reportedly one of the best beaches in the entire U.S. Too bad about the sand gnats. I' ve made the mistake of going barefooted in the summer in Fla and got some nasty fire ant bites. There are occupational hazards to DX ing..
