MORE changes in NYC - BIG NEWS Scott Shannon retires soon from CBS-FM

I remember listening to Scott Shannon every morning and he was my all-time favorite morning person. I first listened to him when he was on “Z100” back in the 1980’s when he was part of the “Z100 Morning Zoo” team with Ross Brittain, Mr. Leonard and others. He also did the “Z100 Morning Zoo’s Greatest Hits” albums and others.

I also have so many airchecks of Scott Shannon from his days at “Z100”. WPLJ’s “Mojo Radio” and WCBS-FM in my collection.

After I was about to finish recording, he made an Announcement that he is leaving CBS-FM on December 16th.

I missed the morning shows going back to the days of the “Morning Mayor” Harry Harrison, because he was best morning person on the radio.

No word on what they are going to be replace, if not, I will still be listening to Bob Miller on WBPM.

If not, maybe Race Taylor will be taking over mornings starting in 2023.
 
Scott and Mason Dixon pretty much created the Zoo format

And Beasley recently screwed "Mason" over in a huge way, sh*t canning him very unceremoniously but after a few weeks bringing him back part time
 
A couple of musings...

SiriusXM is where Scott Shannon's kind of music is played these days.

CBS-FM plays music aimed more at Elvis Duran's age group than Z-100 these days.

Do I think Scott Shannon would go to SiriusXM? Guess it depends on whether he really wanted to retire, if it was decided for for him, or if it just came down to disagreement on terms for his contract renewal. Seems like Audacy is in perpetual cost-cutting mode these days.

Do I really think Elvis would move to Audacy? No, that would be crazy, especially given his syndication deal. Like I said, just a musing.

Anyway, as another radio icon departs this feels like the next step of the overall FM radio dismantling process that's been well underway for a while now.

As replacement for Cousin Bruce? The thing about Sirius is he could VT whatever he does, rather than real time radio. The catch with Sirius is they'd probably want to own Good Time Oldies and move it to their App. Once again, if Scott really wants to retire, this is a way to cash out and still be on the radio. Although as he says, he still has his syndicated weekend show.

I agree with what you say about Elvis. He reminds me of Rick Dees, who refused an offer from KRTH when he was dropped from KIIS.

Depends on how old you are. To some, the end of radio came in the 1940s. Another end came when the big AM Top 40 stations went away. So every generation picks the things it remembers and uses them as the end of an era. The reality is that time marches on. Nothing lasts forever. FM radio has already transitioned to a new generation. The new generation wants multi-platform media and content on-demand. The future is already here.

It was actually Cleveland Wheeler and Scott Shannon who created the Zoo format in 1980.
 
Scott still gives us moments of radio brilliance. It will stink to no longer wake up to the sound of the harp.
But waking up early each morning and being sure that you put on a kick a show and not just mail it in, Scott deserves the chance to sleep in till 10, and grab his clubs for a round of 18.
So grateful for the many decades of Scott waking me up with the chance of hitting snooze going away because I need to hear what he'll say and play, best way to start your day.
 
My guess is that Race is heir apparent. He's the go-to substitute for Scott already, and has well-established chemistry with Patty. That would open up middays, which gives them the opportunity to place someone there younger.

It will be interesting to see how WCBS-FM evolves, Scott has been the pillar of the station since he arrived. Bill Lee and Joe Causi are also aged and one has to think their retirement isn't so far off either.
 
Could Audacy decide to "blow up" WCBS-101.1 and replace it with a simulcast of WCBS-880?

While I think the odds are that are just one out of one hundred, I don't think the odds of such a move are completely zero, especially as WINS-1010 is about to start being simulcast on FM and Audacy may decide to simulcast WCBS-AM on FM (perhaps 101.1) in order to free up either 880 or 1010 to begin carrying Audacy's Bet QL sports betting network.
