MORE changes in NYC - BIG NEWS Scott Shannon retires soon from CBS-FM

Could Audacy decide to "blow up" WCBS-101.1 and replace it with a simulcast of WCBS-880?

While I think the odds are that are just one out of one hundred, I don't think the odds of such a move are completely zero, especially as WINS-1010 is about to start being simulcast on FM and Audacy may decide to simulcast WCBS-AM on FM (perhaps 101.1) in order to free up either 880 or 1010 to begin carrying Audacy's Bet QL sports betting network.
Audacy may make some confounding decisions but this would be the worst decision they could ever make. Not a chance at all at least for the foreseeable future.

WCBS-FM is profitable and gets the best ratings of all of the stations in their cluster across the board. As long as it stays that way, it’s safe.

NYC deserves a big name back in mornings and it's well known from NYC radio in the past like Scott Shannon was and still is.

There's not many options in the market though. Elvis Duran is not going to leave Z100/iHeart, and there's not many other personalities that I could think of as a "big name" that would take that role, unless they move into the market. I think it will be interesting to see who replaces him, but my guess remains that Race Taylor will move up to mornings.

From myself individually, Shannon didn't get a fair amount of respect until I went back and researched him. I can thank Opie and Anthony with their "Jocktober" segments, highlighting Scott & Todd for shaping my bias.

In all honesty, Scott Shannon did, and still does, entertaining radio. Definitely has a presentation prime for an Oldies or Classic Hits station. And, I'm willing to even go back and listen to early Scott & Todd on WPLJ, as the show lasted a long time. Something had to work in the beginning, which the Opie and Anthony segments don't capture.

In my point of view. Race Taylor is a perfect jock for the timeslot he is in right now. Not a real morning guy with an attitude.

Race Taylor got a lot of praise for the way he conducted the farewell show on WPLJ. It showed what he's capable of when performing a live show with a supporting cast and not relegated to voicetracking.

No one is going to replicate Scott Shannon or the way he did his show. It's going to be a big change regardless of who takes over.

Lance wrote an op-ed on RadioInsight making analysis on Scott's announcement (read here).

It's obvious that Scott is planning something, what that will be is unclear. My guess is something national, either satellite or streaming.

I first heard Scott when he was part of the Q Morning Zoo on Q105, Tampa.
And I heard him in late 1970 when he was the morning guy on WMAK in Nashville and I flew in to meet with WMAK's PD, Joe Sullivan and the GM, Jerry Adams, as part of my interview to manage Mooney's newly acquired WUNO in San Juan, PR. They were concerned that I was only 24 at the time and would be the youngest member of the staff.

I met with Joe and Jerry, and was given a task to "critique" WMAK and indicate what I liked and what I did not like, I guess I passed.

In any case, less than a year later Scott became the national PD and he had to visit us in Puerto Rico every 3 months, usually requiring that we work weekends since Mooney did not want him off the air too many weekdays. That turned into a two-day ongoing party for Scott, my PD and I where we restaurant and club hopped while talking radio. Very informal, lots of fun and tons of good ideas came out of not doing this in an office with suits and ties.

CBS-Fm is the third highest billing music station in NYC. The chances of making a change are about as good as Walmart opening a Supercenter in Nome.

In fact, in the average of what used to be called "Summer" in 25-54 CBS-Fm is #8 in mornings, #4 in Middays, 5th in PM drive and 7th at night. So mornings are the weakest shift on CBS-Fm.

More like one in 25,000,000 which is the billing dollars for the current format. There are only 12 stations out of nearly 11,000 commercial stations in the US that bill more than that.

In any case, their highest billing music station in the whole 230 station company is not at all vulnerable for change.

Early 80s, I was hired [at a stupidly low wage at an exceedingly low-rated station] to go against Scott & Cleveland and was promised a "substantial raise" if I improved the ratings against them...which I did. In three months I doubled the stations ratings for that daypart---which means I had four listeners instead of two...and went in to ask about my raise and got a "Gee, we don't remember EVER making that promise." Needless to say, I waved goodbye to the station with one finger on each hand and they had to replace the front door of the station after I had left. Needless to say, I learned a valuable lesson...ALWAYS GET IT IN WRITING!

There’s not much to say about Scott that hasn’t been said — an absolute titan of the industry with an inimitable career. There is no replacing him on CBS-FM or on the New York airwaves.

With that said, shame on the industry trades for completely omitting mention of Patty Steele’s concurrent departure. Her career in radio — where her talent and intelligence make her a rare breed — has been absolutely remarkable. She has more than earned her share of the spotlight, and I’m unimpressed with the collective failure to ensure that she gets it.
