"More music in the morning" KEDJ brand-new morning show

they just play music,,, yeah i know what a concept to only play music in the morning LOL

They do have a staff guy back-announcing and reading event promos, so it sounds a lot like the station's weekend setup (aside from SkaPunk and Acoustic, Live & Rare, anyway) and not quite like an alt Jack.

Shame the station feels the need to mess with a good format by bringing in some new personality to be more important than the music. Hasn't that been the problem with the station's morning offering, trying to force-feed mainstream personalities to an alt audience? An audience that just wants music, not happy talk or comedy bits or celebrity gossip keeps being ill-served by the station that purports to serve said audience only to find that audience running as fast as it can in the other direction.

I love what they did to the station. No more hearing the same top 10 songs over and over. Ahhhh some variety, FINALLY

Just wait, they just started this...ratings take time

That they do.....but unless they figure out how to make money with poor numbers, more change will come. Haven't they switched format versions of what the edge once was ? I'm not an avid listener, but I think this is like the 3rd take on this format just at this frequency. The chr format was pushing a 3 share 12+ and they couldn't make (enough) money - and they were a very poor signal then. Who does this station consider its target is? What other stations do their listeners tune in to?

Oh, to have the reigns of a class "C" 100,000 watt station now!! Don't know if we'd end up in the #1 slot in the Arb., but the station sure would sound fun!! Maybe with this new AM show, the station will finally take off - God knows a good radio war would benefit listeners!

The EDGE could probably get better ratings if they took the drastic step of changing formats. I was thinking they could provide the Valley with a true oldies station. Oldies stations consistently get good ratings across the country and the valley lacks one (KOOL and my personal favorite, the Lumberyard, don't count). KOOL has lost its focus as an oldies station. Although the books say KOOL's format is oldies, I would consider it more of a "classic hits" format as they play mostly 70's and early 80's music. If KOOL was more like its sister station in L.A., KRTH, then it would be acceptable as an oldies station. KRTH has not felt the brutal axe of CBS radio like KOOL has. KRTH still has some great personalities on there (I.E. Shotgun Tom Kelly, the Morning Show). This board's favorite radio station, the Lumberyard on 1440 AM, is great, but doesn't meet the need for a true oldies station in the valley. First problem, it's on AM. Second, it's only on the air during daylight hours. Third, it's continuously pre-empted by talk shows, ASU women's basketball and high-school sports. Fourth, there's no DJ's or any interaction with the listeners. For these reasons, our beloved Lumberyard doesn't meet the need of oldies listeners.

So, I ask, does anyone feel like moving the Lumberyard to 103.9 FM?

YES! Do it!!!! But keep the 14-in-a-row. I can't stand to listen to Dr. Ak-u-bar whine. ::)

And maybe they could put a couple of our old KOOL favs back on-air as well.

The Edge is in the process of regrouping itself and has just begun a new morning show-- a local one, at that-- and you would rather see 103.9 turned into an oldies station? For one: oldies would be better off on your favorite AM 1440-- besides, there's too many miles all over this Valley where you can't receive 103.9 at all. Two: Sandusky doesn't own KEDJ, therefore it's going to take a huge headache, and too much money, to purchase it. Trying to do anything with Riviera now with their restructured ownership could be quite a challenge. Factor in the idea of how "Oldies 103.9" could make money, with its target demographic and poor coverage. It couldn't possibly be a smart "investment." Three: "Oldies 103.9" means more layoffs. And if you think Sandusky, if they did own it, would hire and try to create a KOOL/KRTH copy that you'd like to see, I think they are probably content with KAZG 1440 as is and the way it is ran: low-cost.

Well said, KOOL Listener Hearer Cumer Lauren. Leave the worn out oldies to Lumberyard 14~Forty!

Here's an outside of the box idea from the Middle Eastern Men of the Media - offer TMISU a shot at doing an LMA with 103.9 AND 98.3. That would give KT'R an East Side/West Side Sports Parking Lot on FM! The future of playing music on FM is as good as finding a buyer for the East Valley Tribune!

I completely realize the logistics of such an endeavor is immense and unlikely to happen. I would just like to see a real oldies station back on FM radio, regardless of who owns it. I see 103.9 as a good opportunity for change since the company that owns it is already in deep financial trouble so they might be willing to sell, the current format gets horrible ratings according to the October books and the station is already looking to rebrand itself as FM 103.9.

Personally, I don't have a problem picking up KEDJ in Gilbert or around downtown Phoenix. I also recall when I was driving to San Diego via I-8 that KEDJ and Movin' 97.5 were the last two Phoenix FM stations that I could pick up in Yuma with my car radio. KEDJ and Movin' come in crystal clear where there are no people. Go figure!

I would be just as happy to keep my oldies on AM on the Lumberyard with some changes. The way it is now, we only get 6 hours of music in a 24 hour weekday. That just doesn't cut it for oldies music fans. If KAZG would stay on during the night, hire a DJ or two and get rid of the talk / sports shows, it would be perfect. The closest comparison that I could give is Denver's oldies station, 950 AM. Make KAZG more like that and all will be good in the Phoenix Oldies Fanclub (P.S. We're still looking for a club president)!

No one touch the only Alternative format in Phoenix! The station sounds great now with Marc Young back as their PD. The ratings might not show it now, but just wait until the next monthly. Or maybe if they marketed a little, more people would know it has changed back to when it was glorious!
