More on the KXXO transmitter move: The station gets half of KWLZ/Portland

The question in my mind is why did they not build at Capitol Peak in the first place? I was up there in the '80s and it appeared to have ac power back then.

Money. HBG paid 40% costs and appears to had title for the real property until 3 Horizons 50/50 ownership.
Rooster has stopped crowing. KXXO now transmits from Capital Peak and sometimes from the auxillary on Crawford Mountain near Tenino. Mixx96.1 will operate full power from time to time with no CDRB STA. Without a proper FCC office in Seattle, it ain't improper if no one complains and no one gets caught.
Adult Contemporary Muzak format. Great if you're old.

If KXXO is transmitting from Capitol Peak, does that mean they'll ready to go at the end of this month?

I'm not understanding the shorthand. Title for real property? What real property? And do you mean 3 Cities - Horizon 50/50? And the reference to "proper FCC office"? Is there an improper FCC office? And I know what an STA is, but what is CDRB? And are you saying there is something wrong with operating from an auxiliary site? That's what an aux site is for...

Sorry, your post confuses me.

And Adult Contemporary is not "Muzak", and I don't understand the reference to "if you're old". AC is the most popular and broad-based radio format, with a target of 25-54, skewed slightly female. It isn't "Music of Your Life", it's a mix of recurrents and familiar hits of the past 20 years. AC is not "elevator music"...

This should be a warning about toking and posting.

I do notice that KRWM is starting to sound more like a regular AC station than the almost-Hot-AC lean it was a year or two ago. But I'll tell you what, that playlist is VERY short. Maybe 200 songs?
Yes, AC targets 25-54. Soft AC is more of a 55+ format, but there are some decent ones out there. KIFM San Diego, WDUV Tampa, and probably others.

For several years WDUV has been a 25-54 focused station. While it is on the softer side, it is not the almost-easy.-listening station it was for the previous 15 years.

KIFM is a more 55+ format, but for sales reasons they have been trying to lose the seniors and slowly acquire 25-54 listeners. They are now up to 11th in 25-54, but still are #1 in 55+. They will have to keep adjusting to be successfully salable.

I'm sorry, but I call BS on this poster. There's nothing supporting these assertions other than jibberish and the same is true on earlier posts.

I think bossbill and David beat you to that.

Not only is it authentic frontier gibberish ...

Too bad KXXO doesn't broadcast from Rooster Rock anymore. That was one of the BEST transmitter sites (right next to KPQ/Mission Ridge) in the northwest. Full coverage up to Marysville, down past Portland, west to the ocean beaches. KXXO may have lost thousands of south Snohomish/north King County potential listeners with Capitol Peak. Because will most people put up with a multipathed signal instead of a mostly-clear signal with a couple of faint dropouts? Likely not.

Some not-so-deep thoughts:

Arbitron/Nielsen identifies something like 80 specific format identifications, something for everybody... well, not quite. Most of us can find a mix of what we like, until we hear something we don't like, or more often than we want. The term "Adult Contemporary" can apply to a number of variations. KXXO has always identified itself as "Soft Rock", which I personally find disingenuous. Its actual music mix has tended to be close to our Sunny 102.1 format.

Most successful music format stations work with a play list more complex than just "200 songs". When playing familiar music, there is a risk is that someone might hear a song too often. Vertical and horizontal scheduling, along with different rotation frequency, provides the average listener a feeling of variety and familiarity. The rotation patterns are based on the listening habits of the average person. If you listen to any music station longer than the expectation, you'll start noticing that "short play list".

AC stations typically don't play "new" music, waiting until it's an established familiar song. The mix of current, recurrent, and older established hits will vary depending on the station, but one constant with any music station will be that newer music will be regularly added, while older music will always be dropping off the play list. Every successful station evolves; if you're selling to a specific age group, you must accept the reality that you will be losing listeners leaving that age group, and gaining listeners entering your demos, every day, every week...

On another serious note, what are the odds-makers saying about the 2016 KRWM Christmas Music start date?

Most listeners are within the core of the market; the fringe coverage doesn't usually add much to the listener count, and is meaningless to the average local advertising client.

Agreed - that's usually a point not realized by those in the DX hobby. But will KXXO expand its marketing area with the new signal? They now have 5 salespeople on staff - that's a lot for a standalone hyperlocal station.

I had a feeling that's what they were doing last week, they were just barely overtaking Vancouver here in Edmonds last week. I would guess they're not quite at full power yet.

Right, and as such, they have to run at half power until I don't remember what condition is met, it's been a while since I've seen that document.
