More on the KXXO transmitter move: The station gets half of KWLZ/Portland

I turned them on on Friday just hours after launch and heard Randy Lundquist voicing the station, good to hear him back on the air.

KWLZ has been on the air for a few days now with an oldies format. I have heard on a local board that it is a placeholder format. The are using jingles and are playing 25,000 songs in a row.

I just can't see someone going to all the trouble of buying a jingle package and pushing the call letters and the format, if they have no intention of keeping it. It's expensive and doesn't make any sense!

But how many stations are running some kind of Classic Rock/Hits format in Portland now? Sheesh! How many times can you invent the wheel?

Classic Hits is not Classic Rock and among the Classic Rock stations, even Classic Rock isn't Classic Rock! KGON is completely different from The Brew and I can tell differences between The Eagle and KWLZ but it's all moot because we're on the wrong forum!

The Eagle hasn't made much change since I was down there, so I doubt they're going to make many changes now that they've lost competition. The more interesting one to watch is going to be Jamn'. How do they respond to new competition? Do they stay the course or make changes?

No, I wouldn't expect them to make any changes with a direct competitor running zero commercials for nearly 11 months! With other Classic Hits stations focusing on 80s though they're likely to follow suit. I think it's just a matter of time. JAM'n doesn't have to change anything. It's already current based.

You don't think Jamn' is going to change anything with a new competitor? I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Alpha tries to mainstream this thing and Jamn' goes all throwbacks similar to Hot. I'm just not convinced a full-blown Urban format is going to work in Portland.

It's a Class C3 against a bevy of full Cs. There are radios that just won't pick them up very well. They were never a real threat against The Eagle but getting too far afield would have handed KWLZ a point or so.

Hmm I'm not convinced. KRYP did go #1 with a similar signal, granted that was just before the PPM entered the market. If this were 102.9 I'd agree with you.

KRYP was the only Spanish language FM in the area. When you're limited to only one station, it makes quite a difference. Incidentally, 1520AM was getting some pretty good numbers just before that. For what it's worth, KWLZ isn't a full Class C3. It's 1.4 out of a maximum 1.6KW.
