More Rhythmics Leaning CHR/Pop: Hit FM El Paso, Q-97 Fresno

Looks like 104.3 Hit FM El Paso has recently added Taylor Swift, and even Shinedown. Katy Perry and Pink are in pretty heavy rotation. The station's music mix is pretty unique at times, and they help break certain Dance/Pop records few other stations are playing.

Meanwhile Q-97 Fresno recently began billing itself as all the hits (as seen on its website). 3 Oh! 3 is Top 10, Ting Tings Top 20, Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas" is in light rotation, and Cobra Starship has just been added.

Well, both stations did start out as Top 40s when they debuted (KSEQ in 1997, XHTO in 2001), so you can say that they are returning to their "roots"...sort of.

I am noticing this too. I recently took a drive up the California coast from LA to SF. Several Rhythmics had reduced or even dropped their references to hip-hip in their imaging, instead favoring "hits" or "hottest music" or the like. Examples include KVYB/Santa Barbara, KWWV/San Luis Obispo, KDON/Monterey and KYLD/SF.

Wild 106.1 San Luis Obispo has been doing CHR/Pop for about a year now (they were also CHR/Pop in the 90s). In nearby Santa Barbara and Oxnard 103.3 The Vibe, a Cumulus station, has been flirting with some CHR/Pop titles. Would be nice to see the station move more towards a Hot 92 Harrisburg sound. While I don't see 102.5 K-Don go CHR/Pop anytime soon I think rival KYZZ Jammin 97.9 should strongly look into it.
