More Tivia: Shows set in real cities outside LA and actually filmed there

Many shows are set in fictional cities. Many shows are set in unspecified cities. Many shows are set in real cities but actually filmed in LA (except for establishing shots or brief visits by cast members to shoot exterior scenes). But which shows were actually in other cities set AND FILMED there.

I'll start:
Law & Order, Law & Order:SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent - New York.
Homicide: Life of the Streets - Baltimore.
Hawaii Five-O, Magnum PI, Hawaii Five-O - Honolulu

Those are the easy ones. Any others?

Wasn't "The Streets of San Francisco" actually shot in San Francisco? With as many exterior shots actually shot in San Francisco, I would think it would be easier and lest costly to actually shot the show on location than to only shot the outdoor scenes in San Francisco and everything else in LA.

From what I understand, Streets of San Francisco was filmed entirely in SF - even interior scenes. They often shot in actual San Francisco homes. I guess they could have cheated occasionally, and used nearby Daly City or Oakland, but for the most part, it was all authentic.

I saw an episode recently (they still show reruns in the Bay Area) in which they had to go to wealthy Tiburon (Marin County) on a case. It was actually shot in Tiburon.

Somewhat releated to this topic..even though it isn't true there are still many folks who still believe to this day that One Day at a Time was filmed, well taped at the studios of WISH-TV channel 8 in Indianapolis since the show was set in that city.

What about that sitcom about a Boston family from the late 70's..The Baxters? I believe that show shot right in Boston at WCVB.

...Checkmate was also produced in San Francisco. The High Chaparral was set in rural 19th Century Arizona Territory near Tucson, and was filmed at Old Tucson Studios...

The New Dick Van Dyke Show in the early 70's was set in Phoenix and filmed in Carefree, AZ, apparently because Van Dyke did not want to move back to L.A.

Hung - filmed and set in the Detroit area.
The Sopranos - set in New Jersey, exteriors filmed in NJ and interiors in Long Island City.
30 Rock - set in Manhattan, filmed in Long Island City.

When it was strictly a local program -- yes. After it was picked up by Norman Lear, production moved to Hollywood and, later, Toronto.

Wasn't Dukes of Hazard originally shot "on location" in Georgia before they shifted to California?

Yes, the first season (13 episodes) was shot in Georgia.

...however, there is no Hazzard County or municipality named Hazzard in the state of Georgia. The actual spelling of the title is The Dukes of Hazzard, with two zzs...

"The Honeymooners" was set in Brooklyn, but Ralph drove a
bus in Manhattan. Until Jackie Gleason moved to Miami, the
show originated in New York, either as part of Gleason's variety
show or the "Classic 39" which were a separate series.

Dallas (earlier years before most production was handled in Hollywood), Walker Texas Ranger, The Good Guys - Dallas/Fort Worth area
According to Patrick Duffy ("Bobby Ewing") members of the cast would go to Dallas to film exterior scenes at the start of each season's production but interiors were filmed in LA. He added that early episodes in the season would include a substantial portion of exterior scenes but as later in the season almost all scenes would be shot in studio in LA. Sort of like Star Trek: The Original Series. Shatner would take his shirt off early in the season but as he put on weight during the shooting schedule he'd keep his shirt on.

Other shows which did principal photography in LA but made effective use of location exteriors where the show was set included NYPD Blue and ER. Hill Street Blues did a good amount of exterior shooting in Chicago but Chicago was never specified as the setting for the show.

I saw a story once on a TV news magazine show that showed how ER did many of the exterior shots in which the characters walked around Chicago. I can't remember all the details, but it was basically advanced blue screen technology, in which they were walking on a sound stage in LA. The pre-shot Chicago neighborhood scenes (the "El" in the background, and all that) were added later.

RE: the original Star Trek: as a kid, I remember noticing that The Shat's stomach was often...uh...straining against the material in his shirt in some shows more than others.

Forgive me if I had asked this question before but when it comes to filming a show and/or a movie outside of California, are there certain rules that a state can say as to what can be filmed or not? Reason I bring this up, yesterday at work somebody at the radio on and they were talking about the "boom" of movie production being done in New Mexico and on the flip side..little in Colorado. Whoever they had on the radio claimed that a "large chunk" of that reason was due to some "rule" from Colorado that any movie/TV show that is filmed within that state MUST make references to Denver...even of the movie had nothing to do with Denver in the first place. In other words if one films a TV show say in Durango, Colorado..in order to get the state's OK to film there..gotta mention Denver in the script even if there are hundreds of miles between the two places.

A state has no authority to allow filming or disallow it. States do offer tax breaks and other financial incentives, access to public lands and public buildings, and they have been known to close streets and highways, alter parking rules and provide police assistance. I've never heard of states imposing content restrictions, although the military does (if they don't like the script, they don't let you use their ships and planes in a war movie). It seems logical that a movie set in Colorado would have a mention of Denver someplace. It seems to stupid to try to require it; everybody's heard of Denver. Many states are thinking of cutting tax incentives to film movies in the state in light of current state budget crunches.
