Morley Safer, legendary '60 Minutes' correspondent, dies at 84

Sad news. Morley was one of the best. RIP Morley.
It was Morley Safer who first broke from media "cheerleading" for the Viet Nam war with his story showing Marines gleefully burning a Vietnamese village. Safer, more than Uncle Walter, began to turn the tide of public opinion against the war. Not all at CBS supported his reporting.
Safer joined CBS from the CBC, where he had been a foreign correspondent. Reportedly he was hired with the principal newsreader on "The National," Stanley Burke, sent CBS a tape, including a segment of Burke moderating the year end correspondents' round-table discussion. CBS watched the tape and hired Safer instead.

I wasn't aware he was still working and I didn't know about the special episode until after it aired.
As a junior in high school, I was taking a history test and there was an "extra credit" question. It turned out if we knew who Morley Safer was, we were allowed to go to an event in Cahrlotte which was about 15 miles away and see him in an arena. I don't remember any more than that.
He was my second favorite of the team behind Mike Wallace.
