Most OTA stations/markets you saw listed in a single published TV insert/magazine

Back in the heyday of published newspaper TV guides/inserts and magazines (outside of TV Guide magazine), do you remember what publication had the most OTA stations and TV markets listed that you had ever seen in a SINGLE TV insert? If so, which one.

I don't have more information on this one than a childhood memory, nor have I seen much, if anything, mentioned about this non-TVG magazine elsewhere on the Internet. But back in summer 1990, when I was 13, I remember staying with family at a fairly new motel in a rural area near the Interstate 70 exit on Missouri Highway 19 near New Florence, Missouri. This motel only relied on an OTA MATV (Master antenna TV) system, no cable channels of any kind at that time. The motel is located at the periifery of both the St. Louis and Columbia/Jefferson City DMAs. But that motel had, in each room, a published weekly TV insert titled Happiness. And that "happiness" lineup really brought a lot of happiness if you like big TV inserts with lots of OTA stations in many markets listed in a single issue.

I don't remember each and every market that I saw listed in there--and of course this was long before you get photos on your cell phones (compared to now where I'd want to take a picture of the huge listing of OTA channels. But I do know that obviously, STL and Columbia/Jeff City were both listed. I also recall seeing all or parts of these markets' TV stations in that listing: Cape Girardeau/Paducah/Harrisburg/Carbondale, Springfield (MO), Joplin/Pittsburg, KS, and even KAIT-8 Jonesboro, AR (that was the only Arkansas-based station I remember seeing in that guide for sure). I am also certain that Quincy/Hannibal, plus most likely Kirksville/Ottumwa (KTVO-3) were also listed. And at least the Springfield and Decatur portions of the Springfield (IL)/Decatur/Champaign, if not the entire market including Champaign. I also thought I saw Peoria/Bloomington stations listed--and MAYBE even Tulsa and Terre Haute as well (but less sure on these three markets). Sure wish I would have swiped that issue that day.

The second-most stations/markets I saw in a TV insert was the Des Moines Register's Sunday TV inserts when it was divided into western and eastern Iowa portions. A copy of the Eastern Iowa version of the Register's TV book occasionally showed up in the part of the Perifery of the Peoria and Quad Cities DMAs. In addition to Des Moines, this one I know for a fact had all of the Mason City/Austin/Rochester stations, Cedar Rapids/Waterloo, Quad Cities, Quincy/Hannibal/Kirksville, Dubuque (when KFXB, formerly KDUB, was a standalone station). Plus WKBT LaCrosse, WI--but that was the only LaCrosse station I remember seeing. No Rockford or Peoria stations were listed.

Tim. I'm too cheap to subscribe to Newspapers.com. But I know there are several R-D members who do, and perhaps they'd be kind enough to look up the Des Moines Sunday Register's Sunday TV listings from the 60s, so they can corroborate my 50 year old memories.

Back in the 60s, The Register truly had statewide circulation. And there was on one edition of their TV listings, as the split to Western and Eastern editions didn't happen until the 70s. Here are the stations by sector from Northwest to Southeast:

NORTHWEST
Sioux Falls - KELO-TV 11, KSOO-TV 13 (calls are as I remembered them from 1968-ish. Don't ask me what they are today)
Sioux City - KTIV 4, KCAU-TV 9, KMEG-TV 14
Mankato MN - KEYC-TV 12
Fort Dodge - KVFD-TV 21
Notes...KUSD-TV 2 Vermillion SD, the NET affiliate, didn't make the Register listings till the 70s, even though KUSD-TV dated back to 1961. And whatever Mitchell's channel 5 was back then, it never was shown in the Register listings

NORTHEAST
Mason City - KGLO-TV 3
Austin MN - KAUS-TV 6
Rochester MN - KROC-TV 10
La Crosse WI - WKBT 8
Waterloo - KWWL-TV 7
Cedar Rapids - WMT-TV 2, KCRG-TV 9

CENTRAL
Ames - WOI-TV 5
Des Moines - KRNT-TV 8, KDPS-TV 11, WHO-TV 13

SOUTHWEST
Omaha - KMTV 3, WOW-TV 6, KETV 7
St. Joseph MO - KFEQ-TV 2
(Notes: Although Lincoln's NET KUON-TV 12 was probably receivable in the three far southwest Iowa counties from Council Bluffs south, it didn't hit the Register's listings until the 70s.)

SOUTHEAST
Davenport - WOC-TV 6
Rock Island IL- WHBF-TV 4
Moline IL- WQAD-TV 8
Ottumwa - KTVO 3 (the main studios didn't leave Ottumwa until 1975)
Hannibal MO - KHQA-TV 7 (although I think KHQA then as now really was based in Quincy)
Quincy IL - WGEM-TV 10

That's a lot of territory to cover, and it could be argued they didn't do the greatest job of it with their unusual tabular-by-station format. But that's what we'd grown accustomed from the Register in the 60s and 70s. A quick scorecard, that's two stations each for channels 2, 4, 9. 10, 11 and 13. Three for channels 3, 6, 7 and 8. But only one for channels 5, 12, 14 and 21.

The Los Angeles Times (both its Monday-through-Saturday Calendar section and its Sunday TV Times insert) used to list channels from the San Diego, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara markets along with the Los Angeles channels. The L.A. channels (except channel 24, which is based in San Bernardino County, and channel 63, which at the time was based in Oxnard, in Ventura County) were printed as white numbers in black bullets, while the other channels were bold black numbers in white bullets.

For those not from Southern California, the Santa Barbara market is to the west of the Los Angeles market; Palm Springs is to the east; and San Diego is to the southeast.

From memory, these were the channels listed. I’ve included call letter and network affiliation changes that have occurred over the years, where applicable:

I remember when the Tri-City Herald had some of their 1980s papers up on the Google News Archive several years ago, they had a very large channel lineup. All Tri-Cities/Yakima, most if not all the Spokane's, KCTS Seattle, CHEK Victoria, KSTW, etc. There should be microfilm of the Herald at the Kennewick Library, someday I'll head down there.
I miss getting to read the Sunday San Francisco Chronicles when I was younger...we had a grocery store in the Seattle area that stocked the Sunday Oregonian, L.A. Times AND SF Chronicle if you can believe that! I remember the following were listed circa 2003:

(I think 29 KSPX and 31 KMAX were covered as well, but as I recall their callsigns were inaccurate. I swear seeing 'KCMY' in the 29 listings, and 'KPWB' in the 31...but it's fuzzy memories of course).
Those Sacramento's were listed because the paper could be bought in Vacaville, which gets Sacramento TVs.
Also loved getting to read the Datebook in that pink newsprint - they used to carry a list of San Francisco FM stations every week, not sure if they still do.

Briefly in 1973, the Atlanta Journal had TV listings that covered Georgia at large. It was discontinued in early 1974 when the listings became riddled with errors and omissions. As I recall, this is what they ran:

Atlanta:
2 WSB (NBC)
5 WAGA (CBS)
11 WQXI (ABC)—became WXIA at end of year

The Detroit Free Press used to have a TV guide on Sundays that included all of Michigan (including the UP) plus Toledo and CBC and CTV from Canada.

For smaller papers, the Ludington Daily News used to include stations from several markets:
Traverse City-Cadillac (Ludington's home market)
7 WPBN (NBC)
9 WWTV (CBS)
21 WCMW (PBS) [after it came on in 1984]
29 WGTU (ABC) [after it came on in 1971]

Grand Rapids
13 WZZM (ABC)
35 WGVC -> WGVU (PBS) [after it came on in 1972]
[in the very early days, WKZO (CBS) and WOOD (NBC) were listed]

2 WBAY (CBS -> ABC)
5 WFRV (ABC -> NBC -> ABC -> CBS)
11 WLUK (NBC -> ABC -> NBC -> FOX)

Milwaukee
4 WTMJ (NBC) [removed in early 2000s]
6 WITI (CBS -> ABC -> CBS -> FOX) [added in mid 1970s, removed in late 1990s]
10 WMVS (PBS) [added in 1980s, removed in late 1990s]
[oddly, WISN and WVTV (which was on cable in parts of the area in the 70s and 80s) were never listed!]

You're spot on...

In the listings, particularly when a Los Angeles and an out-of-town station(s) were carrying the same program at the same time, the L.A. station was always listed first. However, it could be confusing if you were a regular reader of TV Guide and the L.A. TV Times, especially because TV Guide listed the Palm Springs stations under their cable channel numbers (KESQ-3, KMIR-6) instead of over-the-air numbers. I was looking back at some old TV Guide listings/lineups from the L.A. Metro edition, and at least prior to 1982, KMIR and KESQ were referred by their over-the-air channel numbers, and it was maybe around the same time that they removed KEYT and Santa Maria's KCOY (CBS) from the L.A. edition. By the late 90s, when TVG started publishing cable system-centric editions (i.e. editions for Continental Cablevision/MediaOne/ATT Broadband), the Palm Springs stations were removed from the listings. Ironically, at least in some areas of Los Angeles, the Times published a TV Times edition for Century Communications (which later became part of Adelphia Cable), which covered some Westside communities as well as the western half of the San Fernando Valley; other areas just got the standard listings as per usual.

Living 'mid-peninsula'(about halfway between S.F.and S.J.), I used to like reading the Sacramento and Monterey listings in the TV Guide and local papers. None of them ever listed KSPX, but 31 remained in the Chronicle's listings for as long as they published them(about 10 years ago, they shifted toward a magazine that required a second subscription).
Channel 31 had four sets of call letters:

I think there was "TV Week" published by The Hartford Courant each Sunday. Besides Hartford/New Haven, they also listed Springfield/Holyoke, MA, along with the VHF stations from NYC/Secaucus, NJ/Newark and some of the Boston stations. I think the big 3 from Providence/New Bedford were also mentioned. I'm not 100% sure if Univision channel 27 of Worcester got listed.

The Detroit Free Press used to have a TV guide on Sundays that included all of Michigan (including the UP) plus Toledo and CBC and CTV from Canada.

Yes, I remember this when we visited family in Michigan. My recollection (which could be wrong, since it's been a long time) is that when we were up in Sault Ste Marie, we got the edition that listed the entire state of Michigan plus Toledo. But when we went down to the Detroit area, the Sunday insert there just had the Detroit stations plus Windsor and Sarnia (Ontario). I kept a copy of statewide edition for a long time, but it apparently disappeared in one of my moves.

If it's true what I saw in that motel "Happiness" TV guide in summer 1990, then this lineup was along this lines as it existed then (I don't remember what channel bullets looked like for each station). Stations/markets in italics are those that MIGHT have appeared in that Happiness guide but I am less certain of this. And I remember seeing religious stations and likely the low-powered western Illinois PBS stations too. I don't remember exactly how the cities/markets were arranged.

According to https://www.americanradiohistory.co...YB/1980-BC-YB-OCR-Page-0984.pdf#search="kvos", KVOS did have partial cable carriage (shared with KCTS) around 1980 in Kennewick and Richland
