Movin 107.5 Dallas Played 20 Fingers, KWS, Angelina (update on Movin Stations)

It's no KTU but it may be movin in that direction. That's righ, Movin 107.5 Dallas played "Short Dick Man" by 20 Fingers at 8 PM today, and earlier in the day played KWS "Please Don't Go",, and "Release Me" by Angeline. They're also playing Enur's "Calabria" quite a lot.

Meanwhile WISX 106.1 in Philly is sounding more like 103.5 KTU in that it will play Freestyle. Tracks like "Catch Me I'm Falling" by Pretty Poison "Dreamboy/Dreamgirl" by Johnny O and Cynthia, Stevie B "In My Eyes", Nice & Wild "Diamond Girl", George Lamong "Look Into My Eyes", even his newer "Don't Stop Believin". At the same time My 106.1 will on occasion play non-Rhythmic titles like "Who Says You Can't Go Home" by Jersey favorites, Bon Jovi. Along with 103.5 KTU and Movin 92.5, My 106.1 seems to be one of three Rhythmic ACs that tend to do well in the ratings. And while KTU is now more friendly towards current titles, Movin 92.5 has moved further away from them.

Movin 99.7 San Francisco is playing September's "Cry For You" in heavy rotation as well as Akon's "Right Now". Older titles I've noticed include Quad Cities "C'Mon N Ride It".

93.1 The Party Las Vegas continues playing Dance records like "Better Off Alone" by Alice Deejay.

With the exception of (god awful) Movin 93.9 L.A., I've noticed that more Rhythmic ACs are now more current and recurrent based, and playing titles like Pink's "So What", Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock, Beyonce's "If I Were A Boy", and Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold". The 70s and 80s titles are played a lot less frequently, mainly in the mid-day hours. That is definitely the case with stations like Movin 99.7, The Party in Vegas, and Movin 100.7 in Salt Lake City.

Party 95.7 Denver is a unique Rhythmic AC in that it's not afraid to play gangsta Rap rather than just the safe crossover Hip Hop titles. It pretty much plays all the Hip Hop and Dance titles that were played on KQKS KS 107.5 (KS 104 till the mid 90s) in the 90s, and plays a good amount of current Hip Hop. It also airs Slow Jams late at night from 10 PM to midnight, and I believe 93.1 The Party in Vegas is doing the same.
Movin 100.7 Jacksonville seems to be evolving towards the same sound as Denver's station though it may end up going full blown Rhythmic CHR. I'm also surprised 93.9 Kiss FM Raleigh-Durham hasn't taken advantage of the fact that this market doesnt have a Rhythmic CHR. More currents and more Hip Hop titles should help jettison this station's ratings in the Research Triangle.

The most neglected Movin station appears to be the one in Phoenix...

So in what direction will some of the Rhythmic ACs move to? I've read today that the new Virgin 99.9 Toronto is doing well, and similarly formatted stations are slated for Vancouver and Montreal. I could easily Virgin stations popping up in the US, mainly on former Movin stations.
Would work really well in San Francisco. And what about Los Angeles? 102.7 KIIS-FM continues to dominate in the ratings, and a CHR that's cleverly programmed to appeal to adults (ie doesnt shy away from Rhythmic hits but plays more Pop/Rock then KIIS-FM) along with the Virgin brand and imaging could make for some good competition.

That's funny because I played the original version of "release me" by Angelina on my Ipod at my sisters apartment 3 hours ago. I used to always request "bailando bailando" by Angelina on Que Buena 105.3 back in 2000 and they almost always got it in. I was probably the only non spanish speaking person that showed so much interest in their station while it lasted and they used to always spend time with me on the phone to teach me a bit more spanish than the little I already knew since I was going out with a girl in Cuba at the time.

FREESTYLE DANCE IN CUBA:
Speaking of Cuba, while in Cuba, I got a positive reaction whenever I played Angelina's songs there. It was probably odd and unusual for them to hear that, but they liked it. It probably wasn't the brightest idea, being that I was there this first time because my father was serving ambassador to Cuba and I was in the ambassador's house, but I always put my speakers up to the open windows and turned it up to blast music as the people on the streets all stopped and stood around in amazement. This is how I figured out Angelina got a good response. You'd know when a song sucked because people would start to leave if it did....

FLORIDA AND CUBA RADIO STATIONS:
Cuba really lacks any really good stations for anyone else other than Cubans. Even a lot of the Cubans listened to the station signals that went into Cuba from south Florida, such as what used to be 92.7 at the time and WiLD 98.7, while in their cars. There was also a Y100 I believe I got from time to time...which was where I first ever heard an "interactive 5 at 9" countdown. It was around the time when 92.7 in Floridawas still playing La Bouche, Lil Suzy, Angelina, Mon A Q, Cleopatra, Jocelyn Enriquez, 3rd Party, Rockell and all that stuff, then they had the all requests show at 5 where someone kept requesting KromOzone Project and Cynthia....etc. I actually learned a lot more in Cuba than I did here in Phoenix when it came to music back in 1998, all because of a station I could pick up from Florida as long as no clouds were passing by.

I still remember the first night I heard "I do both Jay & Jane" (the second time I went to Cuba in 2000, Jan-Apr.) and it was from that point I couldn't wait to get back to America to buy it. I ran up my father's phone bill $1000 calling radio station long distance trying to find out who sang "I do both Jay & Jane". I considered just substituting my "I wont cry for you" record from Michelle Diaz for the La Rissa song until I had the chance to buy it, but despite the fact that both records have their melodic similarities, it just didn't compare. Then a few months later I came back to the US and the first thing I bought was the La Rissa song.
By the time I came back, "I do both Jay & Jane" was already on the rhythmic radio charts and playing on many stations as a regular rotation hit....but of course not in Phoenix and never did I hear it while I spent the night connecting flights in Atlanta. The only time I heard it in regular rotation in Phoenix at this time was on Hollywood Hamilton's Rhythm Countdown. I did see, however, I returned to Phoenix and they FINALLY got Amber's "sexual" on the radio, which was even out before I left to go to Cuba in the first place. Other songs I learned about from Florida stations that reached into Cuba were the Kamikaze remix of "when you think about me" by Voice V and "better off alone" by Alice DeeJay. Cuba however, had this "tourist" station that played international hits every night from around 9 or 10pm - 12am, where I heard other (non freestyle) dance hits from people like Kim Lucas....etc. You could tell most of it was recorded on cassette because some songs they played (for example, "genie in a bottle") were partial and started in the middle of a verse. I heard a "bring it back" record and a "down down down down down dowdowdadown" record, then heard it a year later in the U.S. on KPTY and KKFR... The nighttime show on Cuba's 93.3 Radio Taino was called "Cuba Tonight" and I still have their recordings with "Mama mia" and all that dance and other stuff they played at night. The very first artist I ever liked from that show in Cuba was Gala, back in summer 1998.
The on air slogan: "tu escuchando Cuba Tonight...(then song) oh I, I just died in your arms tonight...." which was the after commercials intro to the return of the music. It was pretty interesting...

After the entire year of "I'll fly with you" and "running on empty" and "toca's miracle" and all that stuff, went to Cuba again a few more times between 2001-2003 and heard a bit more stuff getting recognized on Cuba's "Cuba Tonight" program... which was really mostly American hits mixed with a few international records. This is also when I found out 92.7 in Florida changed and played less dance, and the last song I ever learned from 92.7 from Florida was "gotta get thru this" by Daniel Beddingfield. They played China Dolls as well, but I already heard "i'll know how to love you" on 95.5 The Beat in Atlanta, mixed live from the club just about every Sat. night I was there. I came back to Phoenix within a few weeks before the birth of Energy and found out how big "gotta get thru this" really was.... Flash forward a few weeks/months, "gifted" remix by Angelina is released, Energy picks it up, then KZZP picks it up as top 40 RIGHT BEFORE they change formats and let go of all dance. THIS IS AROUND THE TIME WHEN THINGS WERE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF BEGINNING TO SUCK IN PHEONIX...

...and I'll just end the story there.
Now? Well lets just say that hearing Chris Brown or Rihanna is as close as we can get on all the stations here in Phoenix, outside of 95.1 KVIB.

Cuba Tonight Video Find: - http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=5187261
This is not dance, but the only video I could find. The recordings I have on cassette live from Cuba do contain many dance tracks played during the Cuba Tonight show on 93.3 Radio Taino in Cuba.
The video is a perfect example of some of what they play normally.

The Florida station you're referring to is Wow 92.7 from Key West. Even though it's a small city, it's located in a unique location, and is full of northern transplants and gays. Couple that with being a tourist town and you have the recipe for a Dance friendly station.

Take a look at the close proximity between Key West and Havana (merely 90 miles away)

Yeah, ive heard that WEOW has a following in CUBA, as did the old Party 93.1, and in eastern CUBA power 96 has a following... I dont know how you guys can get Wild 98.7 down there though.

WiLD 98.7 was great. I remember Dj Tragic the most.. I think that was his name... or Trauma. I believe back in those days (2002) that station had a morning show mix show, the old school noon mix, the traffic jam at 5, and then I couldn't really get the signal anymore. However, I happened to pick it up sometimes on Firday and Saturday nights a bit enough to hear the live club broadcast. Friday mornings they did the booty bass mix along with the regular morning mix. It was through that station I learned about Kosheen's "hide u" and a remix of "I wear my sunglasses at night" that I never found. Unlike Atlanta, they were friendly to latin booty bass and latin house, just like certain stations here in Phoenix were in the past. I remember 92.7 from Key West for introducing Eminem's "say what you say" and a few other tracks I never heard on other stations I listened to. Trauma played "why can't you see" by Precious one morning, and there was also a breakbeat version of Dj Sammy's "heaven" that they kept playing in mixes that I never found. I kind of wish we had a station like WiLD 98.7, or what they used to be. Better yet, the old WiLD 94.9 I believe was better.

Re: Movin 107.5 Dallas Played 20 Fingers, KWS, Angelina (update on Movin Station

That's amazing that you were able to DX Wild 98.7 out of Tampa. Hell, the station's signal is spotty in Lakeland and Sarasota so to find out it was sometimes audible in Cuba is just crazy!
The PD over there, Orlando, reads the Radio Info boards if I'm not mistaken (as do several folks over at rival 93.3 FLZ).
Wild 98.7 did indeed have a lot of mixshows that featured Dance music, mainly late on Fridays and Saturday nights, and mainly Florida Breakbeats. However, I dont ever remember Wild 98.7 playing Latin House.
I hated a lot of the Breakbeat coming out of Florida b/c its quality wasnt up to par with what was coming out of other places. The production quality was sometimes poor, the vocal tracks were cookie cutter, and oftentimes you just heard simple remixes to Trance and House anthems, or samples from 70s and 80s songs. There were however some good Breakbeats, and there were some good DJs mixing various types of Dance music.
DJ Trauma did used to play some Dance, but it was his Hip Hop mixes that were the best (and that's what he's known for).
There were wayyy better Dance mixshows back then on 95.3 Party Orlando, Power 96 Miami, Wild 94.9 San Francisco, and 103.5 KTU New York. I think Energy in Chicago was still around back then as well.

"Hide U" is one song that I don't recall ever hearing on KNRJ/Energy 92.7 - and I'm not really sure why. It seems like the type of the song that would have fit well on that staiton.

When it was new, I think I heard it on some station in Texas (perhaps "106.7 Jamz" in San Antonio?)

Just checked.... Cuba Tonight... It's from 10p - 1am Havana time. I caught the last four or five songs before the show ended while streaming and tuned in to catch "miss independent" by Ne-yo playing, followed by 3 dance hits. Sounds like things have changed a little and now they actually have a little promo in the beginning of each song saying the artist and title. Sounds like they are even more uptempo. I love how the tourist station is mostly American music during the international music Cuba Tonight show. The version of the "let go" song by Paul Van Dyke they played was pretty nice.

Re: Movin 107.5 Dallas Played 20 Fingers, KWS, Angelina (update on Movin Station

Wow, all this Florida talk brings back great memories of the road trip I took several years ago from California to Florida. The first good stuff I heard was Angelina (forgot which song) and Jossette's "In a Dream" in Houston, TX, then catching a ton of dance music in the Panama City area like Rockell, Mon-A-Q, Cynthia, KromOzone Project, etc, then catching 95.3 in Orlando, all the great Tampa mixshows, then down in Miami Power 96 and don't recall what it was called at the time, maybe it was Salsa? that was playing tons of freestyle and dance, and finally as was mentioned, hearing Jocelyn Enriquez, La Bouche, etc. on 92.7 in Key West. I didn't want to leave Florida!
