From your comment I can't believe you and I (apparently) watched the same piece. Contessa Brewer does have her moments but this was not one of them. She tried, despite three obvious attacks by John Ziegler, to ask a simple question and was ridiculed each time. Then, changing the topic to a less inflammatory issue, Ziegler once again attacked her as if the question was hers (she was quoting an external poll).
Brewer didn't come off as a "vulgar unprofessional embarrassment to journalism" but Ziegler did show his true colors - and they are very close to your description. But then, Ziegler isn't a 'journalist' is he?

After watching The View this morning, the daughter in question (the one at the ball game with Senator Palin) was 14, not 18 Bristol. Really, I know some people are coming down on Letterman for this since its his show...but we all know that joke came from a writer. OK, so we THINK, dont know for sure.

Quite a leap there. Rush discusses politics daily, Letterman hosts a late night pop culture talk show. I don't see the connection.
Yes, the joke was tasteless and over the line. Accept the apology and accept the fact that everyone does make mistakes.
