MSNBC To Air Nearly A Full Week Of 2012 Olympics

Syfy (Sci-Fi Channel) has never aired Olympics programming...at all. I think USA has in the past, although, keeping it as a general entertainment channel might be best for this time round. At least this year, NBC does have at least a few channels in their stable solely devoted to sports programming...

The last line in this story says it all: "The vast majority of live streaming on NBCOlympics.com will only be available to authenticated cable, satellite or telco customers." When NBC offered extremely limited live streaming two years ago, they had a similar requirement but would not allow even "authenticated" customers to view the live streams unless they subscribed to a certain tier of cable, satellite or telco service. I suspect there will be a lot of "authenticated" customers who won't be happy this summer.

Back when I was a kid, ABC would do 80 or 90 TOTAL hours from the Summer Olympics over two weeks -- even with plenty of "up closed and personal filler" -- and I never felt like I missed anything important. How is it that we need HUNDREDS of hours of coverage spanning four channels?

Because theirs a lot of Sports to air and NBC doesn't have NBCUSP2 and so on.
Pat O'Brien back to host on Bravo and also Beeadie leaving Sportsnation to join NBC Sports for Olympics,Acce4ss Hollywood and so on.
Also Scott Van Pelt reuped with ESPN so he their for Life.

So much for the people who have "Cut the Cord" ::) .

As one who has "cut the cord" there will be plenty of Olympic coverage via the Internet for those who want it. I, for one, won't miss these games passing for "sport" at all - especially the very competitive and always suspenseful tiddlywinks competition.

I do wonder though how a major network, so down on its luck for the past few years, opts to put its usual snoozy summer schedule up instead of a series of events which draw the majority of the eyeballs in the world.

NBC has announced how coverage of the London Olympics will be divvied up this summer: MSNBC clocked in at 155.5 total hours of coverage of various sports, CNBC is scheduled to air 73 hours of boxing, and 56 hours of tennis will be cleared on Bravo.

What, no SyFy? :p

There's another part that was implied before but wasn't specified until today and that is the coverage slated for NBC Sports Network. Telemundo is going to provide more hours of coverage in Spanish.

NBC Sports Network will serve as the home to U.S. team sports, with 292.5 hours of total coverage from 2012 London Olympics this summer, including 257.5 hours of original programming – an average of more than 14 hours per day – the most-ever for an Olympic cable network. Coverage will begin on Wednesday, July 25, at 11:30 a.m. ET, two days before the Opening Ceremony, when Team USA takes on France in women’s soccer, live from Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

So, basically, the cable breakdown is as follows:

CNBC, MSNBC, Bravo: 284.5 hours
NBCSN: 292.5 hours

Also:

Telemundo Networks: 173 hours
NBCOlympics.com: 3,500 hours of live streaming expected

To Be Determined:

NBC Over-The-Air Network
