MTV brings back the Dance Video Award Category for the 2010 VMAs

Well, besides Lady Gaga getting 13 noms, here's the short list:

BEST DANCE MUSIC VIDEO
"Bad Romance" -- Lady Gaga
"Evacuate the Dancefloor" -- Cascada
"OMG" -- Usher featuring will.i.am

BTW the VMAs air September 12, 2010.

Yeah but odds are anyone but Cascada will win, just like nearly every other award show that's not Dance specific.

Let's put the full list up: :)

"Bad Romance" -- Lady Gaga
"Evacuate the Dancefloor" -- Cascada
"OMG" -- Usher featuring will.i.am
"Sexy Chick" -- David Guetta feat. Akon
"I Like It" -- Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull.

WHAT CORE FANS WOULD WANT OUT OF THIS - "Evacuate The Dancefloor" - Cascada
WHO WILL MOST LIKELY WIN - "Bad Romance" - Lady Gaga

I do have to say this though, MTV is FINALLY recognizing that dance music does exist! :) Even as recent as last year, dance music would NEVER have made the front page of their website. This year, it's there! :) It may not be what core fans necessarily like but you know, as long as the music gets recognized somehow then we all have to embrace and welcome this! More potential fans = growth for the music as a whole :).

Everyone one of those singles has been played on dance radio. Stop with the core dance fans because core dance fans would want Tiesto or someone like that to win. Cascada has been able to cross over into Top 40 and song did well in CHR. Remember who was playing Lady Gaga first...It was dance radio. She was even at WMC prior to her breaking out. David Guetta, oh yeah dance DJ and producer that has been able to cross over. Pitbull - Calle Oche... he sampled a dance record that blew up. Will I Am...he DJ's in the middle of the Black Eyed Peas concert. I think Sexy Chick is going to win. It had multiple versions of the video and crossed into hip hop too.

I don't know if this was being directed to me.....but from my end, I was just prognosticating about what the results would be. Like I said in the previous post, I'm happy MTV is finally recognizing dance on the website (and not as a "backburner" category). Things are looking up. Whoever wins, wins...and that's fine by me!

It was not directed at you Tony. It was a general statement. It's all about mass appeal, not the few the proud. Keep that to the Marines

Cascada- ETDF core dance?

But it's interesting that terms like "core dance" are seen more nowadays in dance discussions. There's a struggle going on right now as to who will be defining dance. Will it be the pop acts from the major labels or the independent dance artists and labels?

Now if MTV would bring its Dance channel to America....

Meanwhile, back to the awards, I have a feeling that given that Gaga is the odds-on favorite, she could take this category.

Our awards show is the IDMA at WMC. But even that is a popularity contest. How else could a station no one in the dance community even heard of prior to this year's IDMAs (and doesn't even play a single song that's on the dance charts according to its program schedule and my sampling of its sole electronica specialty show, and also consists of NPR programming a third of the day) win the Best US Dance Station award against established dance stations like Z88.9, Pulse 87, Energy 92.7, C89.5, and Party 105. Pulse and Energy didn't exist in any form during the voting period, C89.5 and Party 105 didn't mention their nomination on the air, and Z88.9 was the only one to mention their nomination, but did so sparingly. It's easy to rig an online poll, or to get people to vote for anything online if you actively ask them to vote, especially when the total number of voters is relatively small.

At this point, whatever is happening right now has swung to the side of rhythmic/dance. That's where the cycle is now.

If those pop acts doing rhythmic tracks can break into the mindset and psyche of those ranging 12-34 and listen to CHR stations such as 92.3 Now, XL 106.7 (since I know you're in Fla), then we COULD possibly have that crowd being more open towards dance music from the independents or our "Big Four" labels (Robbins, Ultra, Strictly Rhythm, Nervous). If pop can create that bridge, then we have be open (from a fan base) to accept those entering in :). We need for things to continually grow and not stay stagnant and stand still. If THIS is the way more dance oriented terrestrial stations can be created throughout this country, then so be it :).

It's a struggle alright....and thank God for it :) because I'd rather see a struggle/conflict versus a standstill :)

All this is similar to how when reggaeton blew up, then MTV started going "all reggaeton". Now dance is showing signs of success, so now they are ready to acknowledge it. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but they are only following it because it's the "next big thing". Just wait until rock n roll comes back... which I'm sure it eventually will, and then it will be MTV ROCKS!!!

Unsurprisingly, Lady Gaga won. ::)

Is it me or did the host Sway did not even mention Cascada?

I had a feeling some songs were missing when I read the first post...

BUT

At least someone "middle of the road" won. It may not be completely dance, but at least we in the process of CROSSING THE STREET! That is always the first step to successfully getting to the other side!

See, I wouldn't call this "middle of the road".

Perhaps from our perspective being core fans we see it that way but the casual listener considers Lady Gaga to be "dance/pop". And let's face it, there are more of them then there are of us! :)

Lady Gaga at the VMA's taking 8 moonmen is a GOOD thing for her and for us! The bridge is now open for those fans to explore dance music further and to that we MUST welcome those fans with open arms and for all of us to stop being "elitist" with what is "dance" and what is not. Hopefully her achievements will lead to more awareness about our music, in a positive manner, thus more radio adds!

Congratulations to Lady Gaga! The next couple of months should be VERY interesting! Things are looking good for us all around but I think this was the "catapult" that we needed to take things to that proverbial "next level"

:)

What are your thoughts on Deadmau5 being the DJ for the VMA's?

I thought he was great! Though it would've been great to see him nominated.
