MTV ignoring the death of Whitney Houston

While at 12:45 am FOX and CNN and other stations carrying wall to wall coverage of Whitney Houstons death.MTV is airing Jersey Shore.Makes me sick

When I first heard about about Houston's death (R.I.P.) I turned to CNN, then MSNBC. Fox News still had on Huckabee. I checked MTV and VH1 and both still had regular programming. Epic Fail

Should come as no surprise. The M in MTV hasn't been about Music for a very very long time. Now if Snooki or Heidi Montag had died we'd never hear the end of it on MTV.

The MTV News people don't come in until Monday morning.
Like they're gonna beg out of this weekend's raves to cover the death of an 80's AC singer.
Not even Phil Collins expects that any more.

E! didn't have anything either.
I actually don't understand the wall-to-wall coverage on the "news" channels. I would expect it on MTV and E!
Very weird.

I don't get it either. I liked her a lot but her last hit single was a #6 reissue of the "Star Spangled Banner" and before that her last top ten hit was in 1999. She's been in decline for the last ten years.

Her death is a total waste, as she had so much talent, but so was Karen Carpenter and a host of others. As long as there was no foul play, and form what I hear there is nothing to assume their was, it's really just another sad passing, too soon.

Actually, MTV aired a block of Whitney Houston videos during the evening for a short period around 11PM Central/Midnight Eastern. However, I wouldn't expect them, VH-1, or BET to actually honor her except with small specials that will likely air at convenient times that they can allocate around regularly scheduled programming...

When Michael Jackson died they devoted a whole weekend to him.

I believe VH1 were showing Whitney videos before The Top 20 countdown as a tribute to The R&B/Pop superstar after her untimely death at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Like u guys said why not MTV,MTV-2,VH-1,FUSE, and BET and E! doesnt do the Whiteny Houston but later on saturday night if u watch those channels u will see on the bottom of your tv screen saying Breaking News Whiteny Houston died of the age of 48.

Jackson and Houston are not entirely equivalent.

Is MTV supposed to have editorial staff on duty around the clock ready to whip up news coverage on the off chance a one-time pop icon who has minimal relevance to regular viewers might pass on on a random Saturday night?

Get over yourselves folks.

Personally, I think CNN did a wonderful job covering Whitney's death... Don Lemon's personal story of being a fan was very touching too. It's nice to see their sister network, HLN, going into more elaborate coverage this morning.

Whitney Houston made me hit the pre-set. I would not wish anyone to go before their time but it sounds like she pushed the self-destruct button long ago.

In response to the post about CNN, I don't believe news presenters should be allowed to express personal feelings or personal stories (unless they pertain to the main story) about news subjects when they should be presenting information.

Much as e hate to admit it, the current MTV audience wasn't even born during Whitney's reign at the top of the charts in the 80s. My 25 year old daughter was born when The Greatest Love of All was a hit

You hit it right on the head, there. MTV hasn't been relevant to music since they started airing :The Real World".

And as for Whitney Houston, I blame Bobby Brown in part for her death.

What makes anyone think cable TV is different from radio? It's all automated all the time. Especially on weekends. I don't think this was an editorial decision by MTV. More of a staffing issue. They'll deal with it once the news people can put together a story.

The difference between Michael and Whitney coverage is they could cover the transport of Michael's body from his house to the hospital. That was good video. It was breaking news. It was the middle of the day on a weekday. No such ability in this case. Big lockdown, so no good pictures. She had been dead for hours by the time it was announced, through a publicist, rather than through 911. Even some cable news is automated on the weekends. Especially on a Saturday night. I saw a bulletin on CBS, but when the local station did a news cut-in, they didn't mention it. The cut-in was probably recorded too.

Spin-off channel MTV Hits has been playing almost all of Whitney's videos this afternoon in chronological order. I was pleasantly surprised since MTV Hits is pretty much Always automated.

You can bet that the producers and writers of the Grammy Awards show are scrambling to come up with a tribute by show time tonight.
