MTV ignoring the death of Whitney Houston

I remember Houston for doing "The Bodyguard".

40 years ago "Houston we have a problem" that meant that Apollo 13 ship is screwed up. Fast forward 40 years later "Houston we have a problem" that means Whitney is dead. :-[

I understand the rage that Bobby Brown is seen as a "Conrad Murray Character"
I even understand that Houston has been compared to Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin in term of their rise to fame and now that Houston is dead people like Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce are often compared to her based on how they sing.
 
While I'd wished for more coverage, my local top-40 radio station did an hour of Whitney Houston music last night... music they probably hadn't played in 20 years. The Associated Press, TMZ, Drudge, and ABC / NBC / CBS all got it up on their websites pretty quickly (mostly copying what the AP said).

Whitney, while very talented, was NOT Michael Jackson. Just looking at their career in the 80s, nobody sold more records than MJ. Next would be Madonna. If she had died, I suspect nearly everybody would have gone wall-to-wall. #3 in 80s sales was Hall & Oates. :eek: #4 Prince, #5 George Michael... Whitney doesn't even show up until we get to #16.

She was very popular. She had a big following. She sold a lot of records. She was very talented. She has a large fan-base. She died too young.

...She was NOT Michael Jackson.
 
VH1 Classic should showing her Video's also Centric and Bounce TV. Time for new Soul Train.
MSNBC tonight isn't cover it and FOX New Channel/MSNBC should have bought in somebody from their Weekday crew to cover it.

its ALL been said on previous posts... so much talent, her passing is sad and tragic, as was watching the decline of her life due to booze and drugs. i guess my point would be, how something like this turns Legit "News Networks" into "The National Enquirer" for hours on end! c'mon! the middle east is exploding again, issues related to electing a President, the national debt, and other issues are ignored while 'THEY" cover a sad story, but NOT anything that impacts ANYONE'S life. i would guess that most people Glued to this story, see this as some kind of NEW "Reality Show"...YET they probably don't know who the Vice President is or Speaker Of The House, and it scares me that they might be voting this November, God Help Us.....
 
My friend called me just as the BBC was breaking the news. I checked with TMZ, and they had broken the news before anybody else.

If they watched The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on a regular basis they would know.
 
In fairness, there was a piece on Whitney Houston from Bill something-or-other from MTV - which aired yesterday on "CBS News Sunday Morning."

I wonder if MTV viewers actually saw it.
 
There was plenty of media coverage about Whitney Houston on TV over the weekend and this morning and that coverage will continue for the next several weeks even after the autopsy results are released.

What is so tragic is that here was a woman blessed with one of the most beautiful singing voices I ever heard, yet she allowed herself to be destroyed by drugs and alcohol.

Not only that, but the Tabitha Soren era of MTV is also over. If she were still there, she probably would have been all over this story.

The thought also occurred to me that had Houston's death been reported at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, MTV likely would have been re-running program from earlier in the night (or earlier in the week), but more importantly, likely would have been pre-empted by infomercials, courtesy of your local cable company. ::)

True enough, but not an entirely fair comparison. She didn't have her first hit until 1985, by which time the decade was half over. I'm sure that if you look at her sales stats from, say, 1985 to 1995, she stacks up much better by comparison.

Look I know that but look I'm glue to the crisis in Greece because look at the USA we are almost there like in the toilet. I know that the latest election is basically scripted reality with Newt Vs Romney and the writers are their consultants.

I agree there are no excuses for her death but I know the tabloids have been playing this card for the last 12 years.

Well said and even if you watched Being Bobby Brown a few years ago on Bravo you would see Whitney not acting herself. Its not all his fault. Still a music icon gone she will be missed.
 
Honestly, I've always thought that Bobby Brown got too much blame on Whitney Houston's eventual demise. Of course, both of them had their share of well-publicized problems, but ultimiately it was her decision to live however she wanted. If anything, both enabled each other as far as drugs and alcohol were concerned, and by what's been reported in the last few days, Whitney's camp were pretty much enablers as well.

I was a frequent viewer of Being Bobby Brown, and all things considering, he acted somewhat normal in comparsion to Whitney. All that show did was further magnify Whitney's substance issues.
 
I don't think that MTV was wrong in "ignoring" Whitney Houston's death. She was obviously an important music figure, but she peaked in the late 80s and early 90s, so her importance to today's generation is far less greater than if had it been Britney Spears who passed away.

MTV has always focused on 12 to 34 year olds, and skews towards the younger side of the demographic. Those of that age don't have any real connection to Whitney Houston, so their connection to her isn't great. They are going to mourn her death far less than those of us in our 30s and older.

If you are in you late 20's/early 30's most likely you remember "The Bodyguard". I'm 23 and I remember "I'm Your Baby Tonight" when it was fresh in 1990/91.

MTV also played videos by Tony Bennett, Eric Clapton, and Rod Stewart in the 90's when it could be argued that they were past their MTV shelf life.
