Music Morning Shows Vs. Talk Morning Shows on Music Stations

I know it's been mentioned that talk intensive morning shows do better than music intensive morning shows, my question is why do music morning shows in general perform poorly in the ratings compared to talk intensive morning shows? Personally, I would rather hear music in the morning than listen to the jocks go on and on about Hollywood gossip or doing some lame phone bit. I would think a music intensive morning show would do decent as long as their are news, traffic and weather updates throughout the morning. At least here in Chicago there are some stations that play a decent amount of music in the morning, Jack FM, 100.3 Love FM and 97.1 The Drive play lots of music in the morning.

If I was in charge of music station and there were 3 or 4 other 'music' stations yacking away about 'stuff'...Id certainly go the music route. I frankly dont find that many truly entertaining..funny morning shows. Many morning shows try to hard to be funny and 'over the top' and end up sounding like boneheads. I admit..Im probably a little out of the target (age57)..but at my age most of them sound very sophomoric.
When everyone is playing their 13 in a row at :50..I mean 13 SPOTS in a row..Id be playing the best tunes I have..for whatever type music station we are. Has anyone besides me ever wondered why every radio station thinks they ahve to run 6 minutes of spots at :50? Doesnt ANYONE think outside the box anymore?

I guess if they do it when everyone else is doing it, people won't be tempted to change the station as much

I'd probably wouldn't program a morning show on a music station that had lots of talk other than newscasts, weather reports, and traffic updates.

Other than news, traffic and weather, I'd want the morning personality to play music with only intros/outros and time checks between records (apart from possibly doing some live commercials) and at most, one-line jokes in good taste.

Sure, my station's morning show would have more than one person on it, but there would be just one central personality: the person playing music. There would be a news anchor, a traffic reporter (perhaps from a service like Shadow or Metro) and a weather person (perhaps from a local TV station, who would do weather updates on radio in addition to his/her work on a morning news show at that station).

On the other hand, there are a handful of "maximum music" morning shows (apart from stations programming "Jack"-type formats, which are usually jockless anyway) with no live announcers, news, weather or traffic reports. Here in Boston, WBOS-92.9 has a "maximum music" morning show with no host(ess), news, traffic or weather, but sometimes does have an imaging voice. The rest of the day, WBOS does have live announcers.

Well, there are a lot of music stations that have lots of talk in the morning and are successful, but it depends on the market.

Sounds like you would program a pretty boring morning show Joe. I think it is ok to do a quick 2 minute chat or something, even talking about the weather or something.
