Music Of Your Life KLKI 1340 flips to Hot AC KWLE

Not sure of the flip date, but it must have been Monday. My wife found out first while trying to hear some news about the ferry mess...

"1340 The Whale" as it's called is different musically...for AM. But the downside is it's another satellite distributed format-in-a-can they have too much of in Skagit County. I was hoping for more LOCALLY programmed stuff with LOCAL jocks, which would make it REALLY stand out from the others in Skagit County. It's "The Best Mix Of The '80s, '90s and Now", nice for AM, if generally overused everywhere else on FM. But I do see a good potential at work here and I'm hoping KWLE can make it to that happy all-locally jocked stage.

Glenn Harris still runs news, but the CBS affiliation has been dropped.

But it does sound better executed than KBRC/KAPS with their satellite distributed formats. KWLE does get props for effort and 1340 has been reinstated on my pre-sets.

So all in all, kudos to 1340....

Speaking of local how are my peeps at KAPS Mike in the Morning sounding and that new morning man at KBRC, Wake up with Drake as well?? ???

Will the new KLKI give Skagit County more local info than Mount Vernon's radio paradise??? ::)

C'mon, great radio minds want to know, specially Lucy since we are now in Tucson!

This is interesting....I heard live/local people this afternoon, a guy named Bryant Johnson and the "Afternoon Splash" and the format suddenly deviated to classic rock/alternative. Now at 6pm, it's running Christmas music.

I asked my wife what she thought about KWLE. "I'm confused by it" she said, "They lost me by that time they got into that Ted Nugent song. I mean, admit it Lar. This radio station has been a train wreck today. And remember that post on that radio board you're so infatuated with when you said DJs should run amuck with everything? Well, YOU listen to this mess. And be careful what you wish for next time."

"You can be a better sport about this, you know"

"I am. But Matt Hasselbeck couldn't put up with this Lar. They need to get their act together because I haven't heard a single commercial spot yet and every airable phone call they got wasn't very happy at all with it"

"It's going to take some time for them to get settled in."

"But they should have been a lot more focused and got some clients and by now they'd have actual listeners. I mean what is it? Is it an '80s, '90s station, a classic rock or something but...what is it this time (listening to the radio)?"

"I think it's a kids school group singing Christmas music"

"There's my point. They should have kept the satellite feed if they can't keep it together by themselves. Now what are they doing?"

"The kids are singing 'Rock Around The Clock'....hmmm..."

"Hmmm...exactly. Enjoy it. I'm in charge of the (TV) remote tonight. You keep it on this station and YOU listen to this mess you wanted. And I'd better not catch you watching or listening to anything else until you admit you were wrong on that board. And I know your password. So watch it radio boy"

OK, maybe I was jumping the gun on that post ("Saying you've jumped the gun again doesn't count" my wife just said over my shoulder.)

So KWLE, find a direction...now. Or be just a little more consistent for the picky twentysomething women out there. Please prove me right..PLEASE? I'm counting on you....

My production company is doing some of their spots----so you'll get to hear some good stuff coming from my studio.....and they are doing at least most of their daytime broadcasts LIVE and LOCAL stuff...which is so refreshing.....the folks at KWLE have a great attitude and really want to provide true local radio service.....which is FAR superior to duplicating the same identical format you could also hear on 880/KIXI. With involvement in the community and being visible through out Anacortes, Mt. Vernon and Skagit County.....KWLE can have a real impact in the community.....I congratulate them and wish them well....the on-line streaming has great quality and their website is top-notch.....I certantly hope the community embraces them. Back in the early 80's I worked at an AM station in Spartanburg, South Carolina(910/WORD)--we were A/C, Personality, and we did everything live and local and we were a success and beat the FM stations. Nice article in the local paper....you wonder if stations in Seattle such as 1150AM, would do a live and local full-service A/C format....maybe they would actually garner some audience instead of brokering the radio airwaves away......

just my 2 cents.....your Spokane(& former Seattle) Radio Pal....

If KGY/Oly is a benchmark, then Anacortes could be successful. While I love the attitude about local focus, etc. the one concern I have is targeting young folks with AM. Pretty healthy shift going from Adult Standards to much younger AC and hoping the "local" hook carries all the weight to keep people locked in when that demo is used to getting same thing on FM. Means from the music product you're competing with Vancouver, Bellingham, Seattle signals that get in there too. But going back to Olympia ... KGY seems to have held its own against "Mix 96" --- both of which emphasize local and compete smack in the middle of major market signals offering the same music product.

Met the owners @ the "sayonara" party for O'Mara and they seem like they really WANT to do the right thing. Such a risky deal owning a station these days that I hope it works out for them ... but major kudos for giving it a real shot despite all the likely "this will never work" crap they had to listen to from all the rest of us in the biz. I hope it DOES work.

The only trouble I see with KWLE is it's music selection. It's satellite format says "Best Mix of the '80s, '90s and Now" and when the local guys do their thing, without warning, the format swings to classic rock d'jour (and this is what irks my significant other.....)

I kinda think now that they should have signed on with the satellite on a classic rock feed if that was going to be their planned direction locally with the music - I admit, it just clashes with the current satellite format.

Or better yet, they should better synch the music format on their local shows with the "Best Mix..." feed. (AM radio just can't get enough currents.) Classic rock is fun to play, I know. But making drive times classic rock and everything else chick music (Hoobastank, Taylor Swift, Lifehouse, etc.) wasn't how KZOK (or KPLZ) did it.....

My $2.00...
