Musical Transmitters: Swapping Around a DX-10, AM-5, AM-6, and ND-10...?? o.O

Gentlemen,

I'm staring down the barrel of the following cannon:

For various reasons of reliability, maintenance, and TCO, I'd like to move four of our transmitters as follows:

Swap a BE AM-5 with a BE AM-6.
Swap a Harris DX-10 with a Nautel ND-10.

And they're all at different sites.

Any suggestions..? LOL =-)

So far, I've contacted Harris and they sent me a list of stuff in an XLS file, and said section 5 of the manual pretty much lays it out in black & white. I'll be contacting the other two companies as well.

I'm not quite sure what your problem is. PUll the AM5 out, take it to the other site. Pull the AM6 out, slide the AM5 in it's hole. Take the AM6 to the other site, slide it in the hole from the AM5, hook it up. Same with the Harris and Nautel. Take the Harris, dump it in the river. Order an NV 10, slide it on the hole the Harris was in.

Am I missing something here? not a difficult project.

And the Nautel, even older units move to any frequency. Strange how they seem to be the only one.

All on the same frequency? The BE transmitters are somewhat easier to retune than the DX. I say somewhat because none of that are all that easy.

No. All different frequencies.

I'm glad the BE units are easier than the DX, I'm less familiar with those. I like the DX.

The reason we're doing this is as follows:
-the AM6 will be moving to sit next to another AM6. So it will be a matched pair.
-the DX10 will be moving to sit next to a DX50. Not quite a matched pair, but close enough for most of the spare parts.
-the ND10 and AM5 will be going somewhere that in a couple months I won't have to worry or care about any more. Yay!

Contrary to what you've all indicated so far in this thread, the DX10 seems to be the easiest to retune. Harris seems to have planned for the process, as the manual has a whole section with step-by-step instructions dedicated just to retuning. They even sent me an Excel spreadsheet that lists every component and part number needed to do it.

Nautel said their procedure is basically the same, but the tech rep I spoke to has to "research it" and write up the list & instructions manually and will get back to me in a couple of days. In contrast to the DX10, the ND10 will take more work because every one of the eight power modules needs to be retuned.

The AM5 & AM6 would be simultaneously the easiest and most difficult to swap, because the BE rep told me they normally have units shipped back to them to be retuned. I was like, "uhhh...huh? srsly?"... LOL ... So I'm waiting to talk to their head technerd on Monday to see if I can't still do it myself.

That's not the problem I have with Harris. The problem I have with them is, how long will they continue to support it? I have four SX series transmitters that have been replaced because Harris does not support them anymore. I have two Nautel Ampfet transmitters over 20 years old that Nautel still supports. I have no use for a company that will not support their best selling transmitter after about 15 years.

And Continental will still get someone at 2 am for a Collins transmitter manufactured in the 60's.

Ah I see your point now. =-/

BTW, the SX transmitters were replaced with Nautel.

Let us know if you ever hear anything from Nautel on this. TWICE I've requested retuning information on an ND-10 and twice I've received nothing. Retuning the power cubes is simple... you can do it with a signal generator and a scope... but I'm not sure about the rest of the rig.

I just got the quote back today, as promised. There's an email with a HTML table listing the parts & prices, a 9-page procedure sheet, and assorted other bits.
