MusicRadio WABC 770, in the 60’s, plus a NYC TV story at no extra charge!

Another story from my teen years about 77 WABC.

One morning in 1965 during HOA’s show (Herb Oscar Anderson) he said that the station will go off the air for a very short time, just before the news at 7:55AM.

Then he explained why, it was a Monday morning and earlier (overnight) the transmitter was being worked on and when it came time to go back on the air around 5AM there was a problem, so since being back on they been at 10,000 watts, normally he said we are 50,000 watts.

So will go off for a short time so the people over in Eastern Pennsylvania and up in New York State way above the NY, NJ state line, can hear us better.

Sure, enough at about 7:55AM Herb said, will be right back . . . 770 went to noise . . . then back on, with the famous news intro - NEWS 5 MINUTES SOONER ON WABC NEW YORK!!!!

Wait!!! I got another – but its TV

Around 1957, I was about 9 years old, I’d watch cartoons in the morning on Channel 5 in NYC, The Sandy Becker Show.

The announcer said they wiil go off the air for a short time and back on, so stay tuned.

Just before Sandy’s show started the picture & sound went to noise for about 10 secs. Then back on.

The announcer said . . . Mom your child is correct there is nothing wrong with your TV. We were off the air for a short time because we just went back to full power, we had a problem form earlier work at our transmitter site in The Empire State Building. But we are now back to full power, so now the kids up in Pennsylvania in The Pocono Mountains and the kids up in New York State in The Catskill Mountains can see us better.

Then into the Sandy Becker Show they went.

This was influencing me into working in broadcasting when I got older, I knew it was . . . and it did and I loved the years I spent in TV engineering.
