Musk, scientists call for halt to AI race sparked by ChatGPT

I agree about the cheapness of the industry.

I would not bet against the IT and computer folks. Someday soon*, in some top 10 market, an accountant will figure out buying AI software will be cheaper than paying announcers, especially middays and evenings.

* My best guess a decade at the most.
 
Just think about it. You could have AN AI John Young (or any great announcer past or present) doing mid-day for a onetime software program purchase.

You can say anything about AI but we need to teach the public about the realities about it or we will end up in the tunnel of disinformation, hype and conspiracies surrounding AI.

The issue I see is any AI system starts with someone's logic, "morals" or values. if you start with some insane mass murderer's thoughts where do you think that's going to go? What could a dictator do to his own people's ability to access or express any kind of independent thought.

IMHO AI could easily be a weapon, maybe as powerful as weapon of mass destruction in the hands of a hacker This could be the end of "secure and trustworthy" connectionless communications. Back to hardwired faxes and phones. Tunneling protocols might not be able to withstand an AI attack. There goes cheap STLs. Any kind of transactions not done in person to physical person could be questioned. Is that person on my screen really that person? Did they really say that?
 
Based on what has happened to social media: snarky folks hiding behind a keyboard, out and liers, scamsters, foreign governments with bad intentions etc., without some kind of controls AI will enable bad actors a seemly unlimited ability to make falsehoods appear "legitimate".

AI as with any new technology it can be a abused. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

But I am afraid it will.

Here is the future:

Bad folks will have even greater ability to cause harm using AI.

I hope I am wrong.

AI has access to all the publish psychology of mankind. It could manipulate people without us even realizing it with false information. It has happened in the past and now with out the power of a computer: Hitler and Germany, currently North Korea, Putin has convinced some folks that Ukraine is ran by Nazis even though the President is Jewish. Just imagine these evil folks' lies multipled an unlimited times by the Internet. AI has access to every any politician's public speeches and could alter them I don't know if the lips can be altered enough to fool lip readers now but give the video editing software time and I am sure that could be changed.

IMHO in the future only face to face interactions will be "real". Anything electronic could be false thanks to AI. That is the "realty of AI".

Yeah, but to play devil's advocate, you could make similar arguments about nearly any kind of technology. Take the internet itself for instance. I can think of many ways my life has been made easier and indeed richer because of the advent of the internet and advances in that technology. That said, there are also a number of instances where bad things have happened or people have been harmed because someone chose to use that same internet for nefarious purposes. Same with AI. It can make lives easier and better in many ways, streamline lots of processes and improve the way people currently do many things. However, as with any technology, it can also be used for evil. One good example in a somewhat rudimentary sense is all the bots from Russia, China and elsewhere that were posting memes and misinformation on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites leading up to the 2020 Presidential election. They were meant to further divide the country and drive a wedge using what were already hot button topics. They succeeded brilliantly. Eventually FB was able to root them out, provide examples of memes and posts that had been generated and posted by bots, and accounts were shut down on FB, Twitter and other social media sites as a result. Question is, how do we get ahead of the bots next time and head them off before so much misinformation is spread and damage done?

This has been done for well more than a decade. There's one group that usually releases videos on Youtube after the Superbowl each year as a good example. They show players, coaches or refs talking to another person, but obviously alter their words to be humorous. In some instances you could never tell they made up the words because it's done so well. Do an internet search for "bad lip reading nfl" and see for yourself.
 
I have a friend who is hearing challenged and lip reads. I watched a football game with him once. He could read the coaches words on the sidelines when shown. Let's just say it's "flavorful". He showed me some videos where the words were changed. That was several years ago. I don't do video editing but I am sure it is getting better.
 
I'm thinking more than just bad guys. I'm thinking governments, for one, who can unleash AI to factualize fiction. To explain, I worked with a guy who escaped from a religious cult at age 16. If you know one, you'll meet others. I was fortunate enough to meet about 5 who escaped their respective religious cults. The thing the all agreed upon was that everything seemed fine but suddenly the pastor would say something out of left field. In a few weeks that 'left field thing' became acceptable and there was another and another. Eventually you are deep down the rabbit hole. By then you're discouraged from reaching out to the outside world and if you do, they tell you to get out of that church so you deem that as a negative. My point is everything seems fine and then there's something strange or out of left field that happens, then normal again as you learn to accept that strange or left field thing.

How easily can AIs be hacked? If hacked, can they be reprogrammed to do the bidding of the hacker? A student I know says his professor thinks this is our biggest risk.

When will AI be used in war/military actions? I understand that is being 'learned' by our military.

I hear AI models are on the way. Why not? People cost too much and are demanding.
