Interesting choices. For favorites I would have to go with WDAS-AM, WDIA, WWWS, WATV, KKDA-AM (despite recent changes which have moved them down a notch), KCOH (afternoons and evenings), WMCS (evenings and Saturdays), and WVOL. Of course we recently lost KRJO Monroe. Yes, all AMs. And I have on Sirius Soul Town and The Groove quite a bit.

For mainstream urban probably WVEE, WBLK, and WDKX, and KMJJ and WJTT for smaller markets (though I haven't heard the latter in years).

For urban AC probably KOKY and Sirius Heart and Soul as well as WDAS-FM, KMJQ and WVAZ used to be on that list but have fallen somewhat in recent years mainly due a reliance on syndication during several shifts. In the past I have had KJMG in Monroe, LA on this list as well.

For gospel WLOK comes to mind.

For community urbans, I am impressed when I listen to KROV HD2 San Antonio. KJMC Des Moines has long been a favorite though they have also moved heavily to syndication in recent years. WUVS Muskegon sounds good sometimes too.

For college stations, I like the classic soul programming on KTSU Houston on Fridays and Saturdays.

10 years ago, KPRS and WJLB would have still been on my best mainstream urban list. KPRS was still idiosyncratic and sounded different than urbans in most places with a real Sunday oldies show and a lot of community-oriented programming. WJLB still had a great, balanced sound and had not moved entirely to the hip hop side.

I have to say I do ike KROV HD2 also they are simular to KDEE. I also used to be a KOKY fan. I like classic soul, but being from Phoenix, we have been classic souled out with two stations offering classic soul and none offering new soul.

You've got to be kidding on KMJJ. It is one of the worst radio stations I have ever heard. Cumulus is a disgrace to Urban radio. I programmed KJMG back in that day. We had a very deep list. Lots of online listening. I also program KRVV. Averages around 5-600 concurrent listeners on it's stream. Top streaming locations are Dallas, Shreveport, & Jackson.

I have enjoyed the sound of KMJJ over the years, not necessarily the music. WHUR used to be on my urban AC list for years and years but the Quiet Storm has become less special and more dayparts have been taken over by syndication.

I used to love WHUR. They are still a pretty good sounding urban ac but not like before though. I like WBLS and WVEE. Haven't listened to WDAS in years but I thought they were a decent too.

Sad thing is that most of the urban/hip hop stations I have listened to stick to a formula and there is really nothing innovative coming from them, just the same old same old.

I've always enjoyed listening to KJMG online, and you guys definitely had a deep playlist probably deeper than any other Urban or Urban AC station today. Are you still programming Majic 97 or is someone else handling it? Also, when is the station's website and stream coming back up?

No, I am not (unfortunately). That was a fun station to create. When we sold it, I had to sever all ties with it. They have made some changes. I know them well and they moved recently to a new location, so I am sure that is the situation with the stream. I'll check on it for you and get back with you.

Say What!?!? I didn't know KJMG was sold. When was it sold and who owns them now? I hated it when they put Keith Sweat on in the evenings and that show is horrible. If you hear anything please let us know.

KP Music Group is who we sold it to. We were at market cap and KJMG is a 6KW rimshot signal to our metro. It was replaced with a 100KW CHR. I wanted to keep the format, but that was above me...

Keith Sweat was good for some and bad for some. It actually had really good ratings. I preferred it when we played our own music and voicetracked nights, but we had to go with some syndication when the economy hit its massive downturn.

The man that owns it is a great guy. I am quite close with him and I do his technical work for him (I am an IT Director as well). I just helped him put together a new studio and I'm sure we will get the stream going soon.

You can ask me anything you want about the station though. I designed the database and selected each song in that library. They got to keep my dataset in the move, so if it's changed any, it was of their doing.

1. Hot 93.7 WZMX Hartford CT
2. 95.5 WBRU Providence RI (Sundays only)

4. 93.5 KDAY Los Angeles CA
5. 107.5 WBLS New York NY

WVEE in the A gets my vote!!

And based on what i've been hearing from people in New York, WBLS fell off a bit.

WBLS is a repetitive mess. If you wanna hear "Feelin' Single" by R.Kelly and "Harriett Jones" by Eric Benet 1,234 times a week, WBLS is for you. It has to be payola.
