Here in Concord,California I heard a Spanish Station at 90.9, it even overpowered KXJZ for a short time! Anyone have any idea what I heard?

Do you recall if it was a commercial station? If so, knowing your location, it should be from Mexico, but it could be one of many stations there. www.mexicoradiotv.com (owned by an r-i member) can help.

who knows Travis. Your area got tons of midwest stations yesterday around 2pm, and again 'round 5:30, according to the TVFM Skip Log.

I was listening around 11:15am, I Didn't have the radio on at 2pm :(

We are still early in the '11 E season. However at my location, I rarely get Es in August; last week of July is pretty much the end.

Any more activity like Sunday, and I'll be ready for the rubber room.....

is 700 mi reception sporadic e or strong tropo?

Depends on where you live! Generally it's E, but if one lives near a large body of water, it's amazing how far Tropo can go.

I live in south Florida.* My tropo record is 1,225 miles (KTDR Del Rio TX 1994). Last night/this morning, I bagged 2 NC stations on FM via Tropo, in the 700 range.

I have also had 500-mile Es....WCBD analog TV 2 in SC from Everglades City FL.

[*Don't you live in FL? Also I think you're on the Gulf Coast....800+ mile Tropo is not unusual. Maybe I am mis-reading this. I thought your question was "general" 700 mile reception.]

It was E-skip. Tr to California is very very rare because of terrain between Eugene, OR and Northern CA.

cd-unlike gar i'm just a snowbird although fla in the summer can be interesting. Never got e or tropo very often when there.

Today, I caught a rock station on 95.1 during E-skip... my guess is WRKI-FM (I'm in the Albany area in NY) :)

Edit: Nope, it was tropo... keep getting them confused (I'm new to DX though)

Could have also been Rochester, they have 95.1 the Fox that plays classic rock. Its a frequent tropo log where I am near Watertown, NY. Tropo is usually lower distance and the signal doesn't fluctuate as much as it would with ES. Tropo forecast looks pretty good for the northeast, you can check here:

I've seen these charts before, but I've yet to have a good understanding of them. I'd like to through this out there, to help me understand how to read the forecast. Spunker, I'm across the lake from you, east of Kingston Ontario. The forecast for Sunday May 29th, puts us just on the edge of the ducting, while Monday through Wednesday, we're well in it. Does Wednesday's forecast (for example) mean that there's a good chance to snag some Sporadic E, from as far away as Texas?

If anyone would like to chip in, with how the forecasting thing works, that would be great!

I always say (re that site), the redder, the better!

There is a chart on that page which rates the strength of possible Tr--1 or less (black) is the worst you can do, then going up up up to orange, golden-brown, red, then even pink, and you will even see grey, which is beyond superb!

Click on the Middle East maps.....generally they are pink & grey almost every day this year....

No these maps only predict tropo which is shorter distance and stations will be listenable for a longer amount of time. Where I live I get all the Watertown, NY stations as locals, most Kingston stations and some of the higher powered Utica and Syracuse stations. When decent tropo hits I will often get Ottawa, Rochester, weaker Syracuse and Utica stations, Peterborough, and even Toronto, Buffalo and Montreal if conditions are right. Although I am just as close to Binghamton and Albany, tropo logs from here seem more rare probably due to the hilly terrain, compared to cities which lie around the Lake Ontario and St Lawrence valleys. From Kingston you'll probably notice the same thing, stations across Lake Ontario will come in better via tropo.

There is even a specific type of tropo called Lake Inversion that happens on the Great Lakes every now and then which can bring really strong signals across. I had 94.1 from Toronto obliterating the signal of my local WOTT one day last summer. Other Toronto signals were coming in like locals while this lasted. This page talks about Lake Inversion on Lake Michigan but the same theory applies to all the Great Lakes. Its nice to see the lake repay me with some tropo after it dumps snow on me all winter. ;D
