My girlfriend lives in Hillsville VA near Roanoke and she can almost always get Kiss 95.1, and yesterday she was getting THE BEAT 96.1,,, She has also been getting a station called Rock 92 on 92.3,, and she is in K-92 Roanoke's Protected contour,, both ROCK 92 and K-92 are both Shortspaced 100kw torches.. Is it normal to get Kiss 95.1 regularly in Hillsville VA, its 177 miles away, but she is 3000 feet up,, I cant even get Kiss 95.1 in Winston Salem, is my radio just not too great, or is it the combo of her elevation and the 100kw signal on Kiss.... I can get Kiss just right outside Asheville, and thats about 2 hrs away. Why is this Rock 92 dominating over K-92 when she is at least 120 miles away, but she is only 40 miles from the 100kw K-92 in Roanoke VA... Also,, what is the CHR Station she has been hearing on 105.1,,, is it G-105 in the Triad,, thats a long way but its the only CHR on 105.1 I know of in the area,, she hasnt got a positive TOH ID and she isnt as much of a radio geek as me, but she definately notices when DX blocks out her locals, or she hears music she likes on Frequencies that are usually just static....

you hit the nail on the head..she is 3000 feet up..LOL...when i went up to ashville I was getting lots of area stations that had faded out but the elevation brung them back in,.....G105 is WDCG out of raleigh...

If her place faces the south or east & has hills/mountains to her back, that is probably why Triad stations are overtaking Roanoke stations. Have her check 94.9 & 99.1 to see how clear they come in. If they're staticky, that's probably the reason.

At 3000', she's looking down on Greensboro's 92.3, while Roanoke's 92.3 is still "above" her.

I believe the previous post hit it exactly. As one climbs from I-77 into Va, you are receiving straight (line of site) signal paths from the Triad & Charlotte. It is a much easier path than the path from Roanoke at that point. Now if you go just a few more miles north from the Blue Ridge Mtn ridgeline, the mtns shield the signals from NC as Roanoke completely overtakes anything in NC. Line of site from the Hillsville area to Charlotte or the Triad is pretty clear, as one can see the Blue Ridge from many areas just north of Charlotte on a clear day. It is not difficult for an unobstucted signal from Charlotte, or even the reduced northern signal from Rock 92 to get into southern Va with such a direct line of site w/ little mountain interference. When on mountain tops, I once received 104.7 from out of Charlotte when up in WV for several days, so the elevation helped tremendously.

At least a couple of years ago, K-92 was pretty regularly heard in the Triad, even with WKRR on the same frequency.

WROV used to come in pretty good too in Greensboro. You could hear 96.3ROVFM all the way between Burlington and Mebane on the interstate A LOT of times. We listened to it in college back in the day because they played better music and had more it than Rock92 did most of the time...By now though there's probably a translator blocking it :'(

G105 is actually a Raleigh station; I remember being able to catch its 100kw signal quite a ways up I-77 going into Virginia...
Speaking of CHRs, does the new one on WMKS 105.7 (formerly WFMX before its move to the Triad three years ago) reach that way? One of the main problems with that station since they left Statesville was the huge drop in signal strength (from 100kw to a mere 34kw).
