My point of view of WEEI Jimmy fund radiothon

Well I Guess its good that WEEI Does this Jimmy Fund radiothon, but as a WEEI listener, I dont like it at all. So I gave WEEI( Jimmy Fund) some cash, and then change the station.

THis goes on at many stations. ESPN has its Jimmy V day and WFAN has a day of fundraising and there is very little sports talked about. Even if something big is going on.
So I say it is good what they do for the Community. But I will listen to something else after donating

We donate, we tune out, we come back when it's over. Everybody wins.

These comments are so wrong on so many levels.

Is listening to sports more important that THIS?
Any fund raiser is the ultimate, serving in the public interest.
This one in particular helps to raise money for kids with cancer!!
Can you take 2 days out of 365 and devote some time to volunteer?
Have you ever had one of your children die from cancer?
I hope not

Boston/Re: My point of view of WEEI Jimmy fund radiothon

sometimes there are some interesting stories that come forth from events such as this one. although i'm still scratching my head over one interview, and maybe Tom Caron from NESN can help me out on this.

I caught a bit of the NESN portion of this the other night, pre-game, and there was Bill Cosby. At one point, he made reference to Jimmy V (and called him "coach"), but the lead-up to that comment was all about the Jimmy Fund. Just wonderin' - was Cos confused as to the origination of the cause for the radio/tele-thon?

Otherwise - it was a nice cameo, cordial and funny visit.

another crass comment--and, yes, I know it might be a stretch or whatever--but is it possible that ESPN 890 started their new shows on Thursday since they might have figured WEEI listeners would tune out the station for those days and look for other sports talk? I know that's what I did... and it' not meant as a slight of the radio-thon

I didn't hear the Cos interview but he was likely referring to Jimmy Valvano, the basketball coach of NC State, who died of bone cancer and there's a charitable organization, The V Foundation, involved in finding a cure, as well.

Bad radio?????
Seems all we hear are comments about radio being live/local/compelling.

They were LIVE/LOCAL and what is more compelling than hearing the stories of these kids and adults and how they've handled the battle of a lifetime.
(Sure beats hearing some loser calling from his mother's basement)

An enormous THANKS and gratitude to WEEI and NESN for suspending their programming for 2 days and through their efforts, thousands of volunteers and donations that totals close to 5 million dollars!

Now THIS is live/local and compelling.

What the heck is your problem? The posters above your comment all said the same thing: We donate, we tune out, then we come back when it's over. What's wrong with that?

I, for one, would certainly like to see more of these professional athletes put their money where their mouth is and donate some cold hard $$$, in addition to their precious "time". Don't get me wrong, sitting down in front of a group of fans and answering questions for a half an hour is... nice. But I sure would like to know the last time Millionaire Manny (so glad he's gone---good riddance) donated any of his "hard earned" $$$ to such a worthy, important charitable cause as The Jimmy Fund.

An oh, before you get on me, I happen to think that the "Big Show" is 4 of the most useless hours on the radio, however I opened up my wallet and donated $100 out of my "HUGE" ::) radio salary during their show yesterday. So jump off that High Horse before you even saddle up.

Stick that in your pipe.

Bad radio is all in the ear of the beholder. Just by virtue of what a radiothon is, it's not going to be as polished and as on-point as what "regular format" is, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's apples to oranges -- but, if you're comparing the two, then radiothon is always going to sound like "bad radio" compared to what comes out of the speakers the rest of the year.

Anybody who's ever done a radiothon (and at the risk of coming off as a ******, my stations just finished up their three-day event yesterday, so I have a little insight) wants to build a compelling broadcast that sucks people in forever, but if you're honest with yourself, you know that people just can't listen the whole time. Fact is, kids with cancer and kids passing away is soul crushing, and it's just too hard to spend two or three straight days on it, even when you mix in as many upbeat parts as you can. So, you hope to keep people as long as you can, hope they donate, and hope they come back when you're done. Seems to me that the people who posted in this thread did exactly what 'EEI hoped they'd do: pull out the Visa and help the cause -- and plan to go back when all is done. Whether it's because they wanted sports or it's just too hard to listen, donations were made. That's what matters.

Thursday is also the first day of the survey week plus it gave them a few days to promote the new shows.
Stretch or not, WEEI actually did some relevant programming for two days, sports or no sports. Tip of the hat to them. Even the Meathead on the Big Nothing was tollerable. Even felt something for Callahan after he finally admitted to having throat cancer last year.

I hate WEEI, but you have to be an idiot to complain about not hearing sports talk for a day or two so them, NESN, and the Sox raise almost $5mil for kids with cancer. Would you rather the Jimmy Fund get $5mil or would you want to talk about Paul Byrd and the Pats signing Lynch for 16 hours? If you can't give up a little bit of bad sports talk to help kids then you should just crawl in a box and die, because your life is pointless.

The way I took the general spirit of this thread was that most people were willing to donate but didn't care to listen to hours of sad stories. That's depressing. I sent in a check and listened to oldies.

I don't think anyone said they would rather hear Steve from Fall River or Danny from Quincy recite their boring blather, rather than have WEEI collect $5 million for the Jimmy Fund. I think Dale's being a little too sensitive.

By the way, Dale, if you're still reading, do something about all of the songs and sound effects that your partner tortures us with.
