My radio got six country stations tonight in midwood brooklyn.

In addition to nash, thunder and ltw hd2 I got wpur, froggy 99.9 oc md and 107.7 salsbury md. I know that this not newsworthy, but it is kind of exciting to realize that we here in the NYC area do not have to stay up all night and tape these out of town country stations anymore!

Back on July 3 I was driving up to CT from the NYC area and I was pulling in country stations from Paducah, KY, and Missouri. In fact, when I got to CT I couldn't even pull in WWYZ 92.5, there was a different country station coming over it. Now that's some Tropo!

Is there like a strong tropo forecast listed somewhere or do you just have to check the radio to see if there is any

None of you youngsters remember the suspot peak of the summers of 1967/68/69.
Six country stations in NYC would be enough for each country listener to have their own station.

To ai4i :

Some folks might not know any difference between tropo reception and E-skip reception on FM.

Perhaps you could explain the difference better than I can ?
And in fewer words, lol ?

Ansky 212, for example, had to've been getting E-skip on July 3rd.

Tropo has to do with temperature layers in the atmosphere "ducting" signals close to the surface of the earth over several hundred miles. Common in flat, coastal areas when the humidity is high.

E-skip is reflection off the ionosphere, similar to nighttime AM radio, or shortwave. On FM the most common E-skip is from 800 to 1200 miles, though it can sometimes go somewhat further, or even "double hop."

I remember those years and the excellent DX. Got a lot of distant TV. However the real old-timers rave about 1956/57/58, which by all accounts had some of the most spectacular reception ever for FM/TV DX.

Even more exciting than tropo is e-skip.
E-skip has to do with sunspots wreaking havoc on FM radio.
Perhaps, it can be annoying for a non-radio geek, but for a radio geek, it can be a lot of fun.
I encountered e-skip twice.
Once I was able to receive 92.1 CITI FM from Winnipeg, Manitoba, from here in Northern New Jersey.
Another time, I pulled in 93.5 the Hawk from Columbus, Nebraska for almost an hour, while driving in the Hudson Valley.

@ PFStorms :

Two cherished E-skip catches here in landlocked NE PA were gotten just by casual tuning around.

We put up a nice TV aerial and aimed it northeast to get the 3 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre stations better.
The first (and clearest) thing we saw was WFTL Channel 2 from Fort Lauderdale. And we had the antenna pointed the opposite way from them!

One casual afternoon, I got out the portable radio for some lunchtime jazz. There is a translator on 99.1 near here which, well, translates WRTI in Philly. The parent signal is on 90.1.
At the time, WRTI's midday host was a gal ; I forget her name.

So, there's jazz, and there's this gal doing the show, and she says 'Jazz 99 ....'.
Wait a second! You can't say that!
Oh yes, she could. I realized that was permissable, as soon as she gave request-line numbers out for 'Dade County and Brevard County'.
Seems we were getting our jazz allright, and the female midday show, but off some station on 99.1 from Miami FL.
There wasn't a peep from the WRTI translator in Pottsville.

Question : If E-skip is from bounce off the ionosphere, why is it not called I-Skip?
I flunked physics in high school, and had to take it over. But from dim memory: Isn't there something called the Exosphere? Or do I have that mixed up with some amusement park ?
