My take on the Las Vegas, NV radio market

First of all, see this thread on Milwaukee, WI radio here: http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,42505.0.html. Uggh, after I finished typing out my original thread, dumb Internet Explorer quit on me and now I have to start over. Oh well, thus here goes, I said at the end of that thread that I would be coming after you guys and now here I am. Here's what I have to say:

First thing I'd change would be getting rid of KRGT 99.3, exchanging calls with KQMR 100.3 in Globe, AZ, make it a hot AC station and call it "Q-99." The logo would be similar to WSLQ Q-99 in Roanoke, VA at www.q99fm.com. KMXB Mix 94.1 isn't even a real hot AC, it's a modern AC. This station would play the 80s, 90s, & today!

Then I would exchange calls with KFMS 97.5 the talk station in Coalville, UT with KWID 101.9 and get back the top 40 station "101-9 Kiss FM." For the KQRT at 105.1, I'd trade formats with 92.7 changing it from regional Mexican Spanish to Spanish top 40 cuz I like that music. Then I would change KISF 103.5's format to KRRN 92.7, make it an AAA (Adult Album Alternative) station, call it "103.5 The Mountain," making the logo like KMTT 103.7 The Mountain in Seattle, WA, thus getting rid of 3 Hispanic FMs.

Then I would get back KMZQ Lite 100.5 and get rid of KJKK 100.5 Jack FM altogether and make KSNE Sunny 106.5 a bright AC like KGBY Y92.5 at www.y92.com. KVGS Area 108 (at 107.9) would go back to being "V-108" with adult R&B and I'd have my own adult hits station with my own music variety at 96.7 with call letters "KZSY" and slogan "Zesty Scotty Mix 96.7 FM." BTW, I was the one who came up with that idea of a variety hits formaty first, NOT the stupid guys at those Jack FMs! It would play one song, then one single commercial, and have a 24 hour no repeat workday, with a dance show Saturday Nights with 90 min. music sets.

That's what I'd do with Las Vegas, NV radio cuz right now it sucks beyond sucksville! The best radio market ever made was the Salt Lake City, UT if KPQP 101.9 Pop FM hadn't changed and KQMB Star 102.7 hadn't changed either. Another one is the Reno/Lake Tahoe, NV/CA market. If of course, KNVQ Q-102 (at 102.9) hadn't changed to an urban format which is now Wild 102.9 and KNEV hadn't been changed to an AC format from Mix 95.5 as a hot AC to Magic 95.5. Of course, the best radio market nowadays has got to be the Fort Wayne, IN market. They have FOUR hot AC stations there! WAJI Majic 95.1, 97.3 WMEE, WDFM Mix 98.1, & WYLT My 103.9. Course if WDDB B106.3 was still there as a top 40 outlet and if WCKZ Z94.1 was still an 80s pop station, that would be even better.

To conclude, Las Vegas, NV is a sucksville radio market and that is what I think should be done according to my preferences above. It doesn't need 5 Hispanic FMs! Only 2 at the most! All you Spanish people go back to your country where you came from or either learn the damn English language! Thank you. That's all I have to say for now.
 
Why does what you want essentially eliminate the two most popular Spanish langauge formats, regional Mexican (KISF) and Mexican AC (KWID and KRG>T) and replace them with a Spanish CHR, which is not a popular format anywhere in the US? That leaves most Las Vegas Hispanics with no service, as CHIR is of no interest to the listeners to KISF or KWID and KRGT.

I almost missed this paragraph! I wish I had.

First, there are probably less than 200 Spanish people in all of Las Vegas. Spanish people are folks from Spain. The people you are imprecisely referring for are Latinos or Hispanics (both being almost synonymous) and most come from Mexico, Central and South America

As mentioned in another post, people who grow up in another culture or nation have thier music tastes formed in early adolescence. No matter how much English is learned, if we like a Regional Mexican or Cumbia or Spanish langaiuge AC or whatever, we are not going to stop liking it and suddenly start listening to Z.Z. Topp or the Dixie Chicks or whatever.

There are as many or more formats in Spanish as in English. Las Vegas will soon be a third Hispanic. There will be, if anything, more Spanish stations as time passes.

The biggest groups get served first. You obviously are in one of the fringe groups, so I understand your discontent. There is no vallenato station in LA, so I feel the same way.
 
I see David. Thanks for reading and replying. The above is what I would call my fantasy radio scene. It would be just perfect for me. I do understand that stations change for what's best in the market and obviously you are right, Las Vegas is a Hispanic community in some parts and I can't change that. However, I do feel that it just has too many Spanish stations and needs to be taken down a notch. Why is Spanish CHR not a popular format? I thought it was. Anyone else who has opinions, feel free to post.
 
well, i guess you have a solution for everything. i think if you really ponder on it spanish speaking music is not suited only for non-english listeners. if you read into it, looking past your very ethno-centric view, "spanish" music is about culture, which you can't rip from people, and it is a highly profitable market.

The bulk of immigrants to the Southwest are from rural Mexico.... they like the equivalent of country instead of pop music. Really simple. And CHR requires a huge cume to work, so it is not heard except int he very big cities of Mexico, making the music and artists unfamiliar to most Hispanics from there in the US.

Some parts? Try a MAJORITY of the population in LV is Hispanic. If African Americans were the predominant ethnicity, those Spanish stations would probably be some form of urban. Look at my home market of Philly as an example.

Actually, I think LV is a PERFECT market. Every format/genre has balance. Only thing lacking might be a MAINSTREAM CHR.

I was only out once, Jan-Feb 2005, and was rather impressed with the market as a whole. (especially the ORIGINAL K-Jewel)
 
Here is your mainstream CHR, but...

ok this radio station out of needles, ca says advertises that they broadcast in las vegas if you check the website,
http://www.theknack107.com/index.mv you can see what i'm talking about.. now, does anyone know if they have any plans to expand into las vegas. I live in N Las Vegas and you can hear them on 107.1FM, but its not clear at all. So, who knows anything about this???

Las Vegas is 23% Hispanic. Of this group, 70% is Spanish dominant.
 
They will shop it to death and then go with some one of their own race....ad rates and pay on spanish stations are low because the income of listeners is generally low....check bureau of labor statistics, etc.
