my turn to complain: why must we be subjected to LJ?

This is probably redundant, since it's been discussed elsewhere but I've had on the Big Show that past hour and been subjected to the sanctimonious, annoying Larry Johnson. With all the other guests they have available, why should he be on there? Stick with the newspaper guys. They may not have radio voices but are usually better-informed. I imagine it's because it's the last week of August and a lot of people are away.

I know of LJ for his sports cartoons in the paper; tech. he's a newspaper guy, one might say.
Newspaper people could be good on radio (Howie!)...then again, it could be like what's happening
in DC as Washington Post Radio is going away next month...

speaking of "next month" I just heard an ad on WRKO promoting their need for sales people,
"at the home of Tom Finneran, Howie Carr, and the Boston Red Sox". Hey Howie! Nice to know
they put the Felon first...also, in about a month, the middle name might have to be
edited out of that ad, if it's still running by then.

The day before WXKS-AM/WKOX-AM flipped from progressive radio to Espagnol, they ran a spot for sales representatives to sell liberal talk.

I Love LJ , he brings God to WEEI . We Love The Lord !

ah, but this man of the lord loves hockey fights. Last winter, he and Craig were talking about hockey fighting. Craig doesn't like it and Larry was basically calling Craig a wuss because of it. That doesn't sound very christian!

I also don't understand why Larry Johnson gets so much time (or any at all, for that matter) on WEEI. It's easy enough to avoid his hideous Saturday show, but it's really annoying when he screws up afternoon drive. He has nothing to offer. He has a whiney effeminate voice and has never played or covered a sport. What do I get from him that I can't hear at the coffee shop? As Pete Gustin has dubbed him, he's the "Recycler". He has no contact with the players or coaches. Every thing he says he's copied from some one else.

Somehow he's decided that he's funny. He reminds me of a fifth grader who's trying to be the class clown. He'll latch on to a phrase and use it hundreds of times, until Brett and Andy start making fun of him. If this guy's a minister, his church must have very low standards.

I know one person who works for Entercom who said that he's considered a pain in the butt by a lot of people at WEEI. Any of the radio insiders heard this?

I can't stand him either but I think WEEI brings him back because of the fact that he is not "connected" to a team via media credentials. He is one of us. He is a fan. What gets me is that he doesn't know jack beyond the Red Sox, and even that isn't much. He can't talk Patriots, though most on WEEI can't. He tries to talk about the NBA and comes across sounding foolish. For the two weeks that his show coincides with the majority of the NCAA tournament, he talks about college hoops and that is actually quite humorous. In short, he is a know nothing hack who WEEI keeps employed because he is the voice of the fan.

I thought Danny from Quincy was the voice of the fan :D

Danny the Screecher does seem to think that he's more than a caller. Every time he calls he says something about not wanting to cut into his time. He probably thinks everyone is waiting for the "Danny Report". I've only heard him talk about not signing Pedro or not signing Orlando Cabrera. I guess he's a two trick pony.

I'm sure Casablanca will think I'm a racist for saying this, but I think Larry is on WEEI solely because of his race. Because of D&C's metco gorilla incident, I think that they're really paranoid about anything that could be construed as racial. Supposedly they even called Sadiki Kambon(sp), a Boston based, Al Sharpton wannabe, to assure him that Bernard Mc Guirke would not be hired by WRKO.

but there are some other African-American people on the station--well, two I can think of--Michael Holley and Steve Burton (whose tough guy persona is completely unconvincing).

as for Danny, I've heard him call into the new 1510 morning show--Mike and Lew and the latter guy actually goes by the name "Lew In The Car." That show is pretty much a train-wreck, by the way. They talk about they won't yell over each other like 'down the dial,' and that's exactly what they do. Also, they have a female co-host but anytime she starts to talk, they talk right over her. I think I've heard her complete about two sentences. I've been putting it on during WEEI's commercial breaks. It's marginally better than Dakota from Braintree's short-lived 1510 show but that ain't sayin' much.

I would agree, Larry Johnson's hold out and constant whining to the media about not being "respected" gets old, but as a long-standing Chiefs fan I suppose I'll just put up with it. Honestly, another 1,700 yard season and 20 or so TD's would be a nice way to move this now-stagnant offense along.

I'm more concerned about the defense, which is supposed to be the anchor of the team. If they don't do their part, LJ's performance will again be over-shadowed by a 9-7/8-8 (or worse) record. Since the QB situation is shaky, at best (vanilla Damon Huard or unproven gunner Brodie Croyle) the defense has got to be rock solid.

This is what we're talking about...right?

:D :D :D

whatever happened to the Nigerian Nightmare Christian Okoye anyway?

Holley and Burton actually have sports backgrounds as reporters. Whether you like them or not, there do seem to be logical reasons for them being on the air. I'm not crazy about Holley's stupid little songs and his man-love shtick, but other than that I think he's pretty knowledgable. Burton has tons of contacts and has been in clubhouses and locker rooms for years. As far as I can tell, Larry Johnson is a cartoonist (who's been accused of tracing his work) with no broadcasting training or sports background and a bad voice. Despite his claim to be some kind of minister, it's obvious that he's not educated. If radio is such a cut-throat business, why is he on the air? I think he has an ace in the hole.

Also, I think that Danny from Quincy actually graduated from CT School of Broadcasting. Imagine having a voice like that and aspiring to a career in radio.

I wish Larry Johnson would return to The New York Knicks . New York needs a NBA Team .
