NAB Radio Show: HD coming in cell phones, iPods, eTablets and smart phones

From Mark Ramsey: "The campaign, which has been running in phases since April, will have likely burned through most of its dollar value once 2007 rolls around."

You sure quote this Mark Ramsey guy a lot. Honestly - who gives a ****?

I'd rather quote the Mays brothers, or the Dickey brothers or SOMEBODY who has some modicum of control over where the industry goes instead of a radio pundit with a blog. ANYONE could do that.

Mark's company, Mercury Research, is a well-respected radio consulting firm who has, among other clients, Clear Channel. As such, Mark is not against HD Radio as a technology-judging from his recent presentation to broadcasters.

What he is against is the perception that HD Radio will save the terrestrial radio business and help it compete against satellite (it won't) or that consumers will rush out to buy HD Radio because they can get an extra channel of audio and that it's digital (they won't). HD Radio is lulling broadcasters into a false sense of security and directing their attention away from the real problems of radio: lack of compelling content and a strategy for integrating other media.

Conversely, Mark seems to feel that their is little future for the lone internet-only broadcaster, at least as far as a business model.

Mark has actually stated that he is a supporter of HD Radio - now, if this is for political reasons, who knows, but he must have a grasp of the serious technical issues with IBOC.

With clients like CBS Radio, Clear Channel AND Sirius, Ramsey has to be a bit of a politician about HD Radio.

BTW, this is my final post (just kidding).

And when they accomplish this most unlikely technological feat (c'mon - nobody else has ever pulled this off before after all) they plan to put HD Radio in cell phones and iPod like devices...

Dude maybe the I-pod, I highly doubt in a phone because of the additional RF deck, special codec and licensing. The folded dipole attached to your phone might be a tad cumbersome. :D

Besides internet streaming already works on many cell phones. The killer app has already been invented on the phone---internet. HD radio on a cell phone is like reinventing the wheel. There will be no demand for it since the phone would already be streaming capable.

Keep dreaming...

Only the entire radio business. Ramsey runs one of the most respected research firms in broadcasting. What he says carries a lot of weight, regardless of what medium he uses to say it.

Yes, anyone could do that, but no one would listen. Ramsey knows what he's talking about, and his track record proves it.

This is exactly why IBOC is poised to be a massive failure. It's being marketed exclusively to owners who have no idea what is going to be done to their (and other) signals in the name of "revitalizing" radio. Engineers are out of the sales loop. Huge amounts of money are being spent with no promise of a return, but with plenty of looming danger for the radio business.

The Satellite business model has brought in millions of subscribers. The HD Radio pace is exactly where we would like it to be - no public interest ! The Cartel also stated that HD Radio would be around last Christmas, too. Boy you just don't get it - as Mark Ramsey has stated:

"If They Build it, Will They Come ?"

http://www.hear2.com/2006/10/if_you_build_it.html

Yeah - satellite has brought in ones of millions of subscribers for each satcaster. Not exactly the adoption they were hoping for apparently, since they are both bleeding red ink.

Their attempts to generate more interest - like pulling Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony away from terrestrial radio have failed to generate sufficient return on investment and caused them to bleed more red ink.

HD Radio is available - and it's available now. Walk into most Radio Shack stores in most HD markets and you can buy an HD radio. As evidenced by your meltdown in reviews on their sites, you can also get HD at Circuit City, Tweeter, Crutchfield, etc. That apparently bugs you to no end!

As they predict, by 2009-2010 - I expect to be able to buy HD Radio just about anywhere and in many form factors.
:D

Funny, no HD radios in stores, yet, as the Cartel promised last year ! No HD radios in Radio Shack, Circuit City, or Best Buy, in my Wash., D.C. metro area, in Maryland ! I am glad you have enjoyed my reviews, because they have received many positive votes - anything I can do to keep this destructive "technology" from happening ! No HD Radio in any Christmas fliers, or fliers in Sunday's Washington Post ! More of your lies ! The HD Radio Big Rollout has been a complete joke and a failure ! :DHow much are they paying you for putting out all this good news? Here in New York city I can get HD in Radio Shack,Circuit City J&R music 8)

So, along with the across the board rebates, the HD cartel will be offering all expense paid trips to NYC to hear HD?
WOW!
Who would have thought those penny pinchers would be so generous. I guess they finally saw the iBiquitous error of their ways, and got religion. ::)

The idea of building an HD Radio inside a cell phone is impractical, unnecessary, and complete nonsense.
Most HD internet streams are already available on the new generation of cell phones, so zero new programming would result. Absolutely no benefit.
Besides the necessity of cumbersome dipole and loop antennas, toting the necessary car battery along to power the hungry HD monster would soon discourage anyone considering this farce.
Current HD Radios require several amps at 12 volts, definitely not available in cell phones. In a car there is an engine powered alternator to recharge the car battery. So in addition to the car battery you might have to carry a portable generator for recharging, in order to get much HD play time. HD Radio in cell phones, ipods, eTablets, smart phones, etc., will remain a total fantasy, probably forever.
