Nationalities of Artists that get played in US stations

Something interesting happened to me today. I heard a Chilean guy that mentioned that he was related to some famous Chilean singers. Then I noticed that I have never heard any Chilean singers on the radio: in fact, the only one I've ever heard was Beto Cuevas in a couple of songs.

I then decided to make a list of the top 10 songs on many U.S. Latin Top 40 and Adult Contemporary Stations, and I noticed that many of the singers come from either Puerto Rico or Mexico, with Colombians, Dominicans and Spanish people making a lot of appearances as well. I wonder why don't get a lot of singers from Ecuador or Peru, or why you can count well-known singers from Central America on one hand. It also amazes me how much talent Puerto Rico has for such a small island.

If you go a bit deeper, you find that pop stations in Agentina play a very high percentage of Argentine artists like Miranda! and A Teens, followed by reggaetón from PR, Colombia, the US and then pop from Chile, Mexico and Spain It's just that the Argentine pop singers and groups don't get a lot of play outside Argentina and practically outside South America.

Go to Chile, and you hear a lot of Los Bunkers and Mario Guerrero Kudai and then the reggaetón and Spanish stuff.

In both cases, half the music is in English.

If you look in Mexico, you see a whole bunch of Mexican artists like Camila and Zoé and Belanova, plus Shakira, Ricky Martin and some artists from Spain plus the English hits. Very little Reggaetón there, too.

And in the US, if you listen to a pop station in PR, you will hear Ednita and Fonsi and a few things from Mexico and even less from South America.

For decades, nearly any ballad and pop music coming out of the US came from Puerto Rico or from Puerto Ricans in NY That was the base, since in the 70's, for example, PR could sell more records a year than contries like Colombia and Argentina. That was because the LP was $5 or $6, and cost only a little more than a person made in an hour at the average job. In Mexico, $6 was more... than the average daily wage. Folks in PR bought lots of records. People in less posperous nations did not. So the record industry in PR and the US developed talent and spent on marketing, because an LP in PR could sell 100,000 copies with some ease, while a gold record in Argentina was 50,000 copies in a nation almost 10 times as large in population.

In the near-decade I ran a Top 40 in Ecuador, only once did we play a pop song by a local artist... because we had recorded it ourselves. Otherwise, there was nothing. Yet I played Chucho and Lissette and Los Kids from Ponce and Julio Angel and Al Zepy and and Danny Rivera and so many more: PR had a market locally for music, while Ecuador did not. In fact, nearly 100% of what I played on the air was not even on sale in the country. There was no record market.

Wow, and even today... there are no Ecuadorian artists unless you count Christina Aguilera, and she had to learn to sing in Spanish!

Also, I noticed that there are very few Dominicans who don't sing either bachata or merengue. Very little mainstream pop. What's the radio scene like in the DR?
