Nationwide Audacy layoffs impact “Star 94”

In 1994, the year I moved to Atlanta, WGST was in the third year of a 3-year contract to carry the Braves. But, surprise! The Braves suddenly became good in 1991, and WSB wanted them back. So WSB outbid Jacor (then owner of WGST) and regained the Braves in 1995.

So...in 1995, WSB carried the Braves, the Falcons, the Hawks, and UGA football and basketball. Talk about overlap! And to be honest, I don't recall how they handled 2 games being played simultaneously. At that time, the only Cox FM's were 98.5 and 104.1.

My thinking was to acquire the Braves and put them on 94.1, then Audacy would control all of the pro sports radio rights in town. Sell 92.9 and 94.1 in tandem, destroy 680 The Fan, and own every bit of the sports-talk audience in Atlanta.
They'd have to pick up Tech, too.

When was Cox LMAing 680? Don't remember the dates, sometime in the late 90s. I remember 680 picked up a lot of personalities from WGST's Planet Radio fiasco. This might have been the brief period when WGST had Tech.

As I recall the Hawks wound up on 104.1 a lot, and 98.5 got a lot of the conflict games.

I hope Star keeps its direction. It's something different and something that most markets don't have. But radio is a business and profitability is what matters most.
