NBC ADDS 4 LP AFFILIATES (DOTHAN-AL, JONESBORO-AK, JACKSON-TN, IA-MO)

Last time I was in the Alabama portion of the Dothan area WSFA was the only NBC affiliate carried on cable systems. WJHG from Panama City had a fine OTA signal in the area, but I'm not aware of any historical significant viewing of the station on the Alabama side of the Dothan market. I also don't recall seeing any Dothan area news or weather on WJHG.

I have seen one small cable system in Seminole County GA that carried WJHG, WMBB, WDHN, WTVY, WALB, WABW and the complete Tallahassee affiliate lineup. That would be about 10 years ago though. Go back 25 years and that same cable system also carried two Columbus GA stations but no UHF stations from Tallahassee.

I'm pretty sure the Dothan DMA claims Seminole County, GA, even though this specific cable system didn't carry Fox or PBS from Dothan.

It would actually stand to reason that WSFA would be the de facto NBC
affiliate for Dothan, since Dothan viewers would have little or no interest
in Florida news (the same reason WEAR's newscasts are hardly viewed in
Mobile), and if Brian Williams is the network anchor of choice, his viewers
are more likely to stay put if they know that Alabama news is coming
up next. (Much the same thing with Time Warner Cable in Myrtle Beach
carrying WIS for several years; WIS offers South Carolina news, while WECT
is North Carolina-oriented, although a lot of visitors to the Grand Strand are
from North Carolina. Now there's no choice; all of the Big Three are South
Carolina stations.)

Back to Dothan: go a little south to Marianna, FL, and I'd guarantee that
WJHG is their de facto NBC affiliate, simply because, as a Panama City station,
it's going to emphasize Florida news.

But here's a question: the Outer Banks of North Carolina are in the Norfolk DMA,
and while all the Hampton Roads stations are carried on cable, so are two North
Carolina stations: WITN and WNCT, so people there aren't confined to Virginia news.
Now go down to south Georgia, especially Brunswick and Waycross, in the Jacksonville
DMA. Are those people stuck with Florida news? Or is Savannah available on cable?

As the LPTV stations are now up for sale, I wouldn't count on WSFA being dropped from cable in Dothan anytime soon -- or any new NBC affiliates that are local to Dothan.

Savannah channels are available via cable in Brunswick.

maybe it's a good idea for NBC to add 4 LP Affiliates ,if and when NBC returns to #1 (or at least #2 behind FOX) those 4 LP stations will benefit.
