NBC Affiliates In Detroit, Baltimore Tinker With Super Bowl

In Baltimore, during the Bruce Springsteen halftime performance, WBAL inserted the nightly Maryland lottery drawing:

But that's small ball compared to what Detroit's WDIV did. During the pregame show, every time former Lions president and current NBC analyst Matt Millen appeared on the screen, they ran a crawl on the bottom reading, "Knowing his history with the team, is there a credibility issue as he now serves as an analyst for NBC Sports?" Then it prompted viewers to comment on their website.

Maybe it's just me, but one of my big pet peeves is when a TV station interrupts or otherwise interferes with a national/global broadcast of major significance or historical value. I think there is a certain 'untouched' value to major broadcasts that helps to draw people into the moment. For the person recording the Super Bowl broadcast, seeing stupid messages rolling across a ticker might be annoying.

Our local ABC affiliate kept going split-screen during the inauguration to show festivities at a viewing party at the same time. What's worse...they had to switch their HD feed to SD whenever they did the split screen. I thought I would pull my hair out.
 
Thats funny what the NBC station in Detroit did. You mostly see a ticker for a weather warning or news. But I think it was fine. Only during the pregame show not the major part of the show. If it was during the game then it would be a problem.
