Few people were aware that Cruise, Moore, or Bacon had acting talent before they were cast in roles where they got to display their talent. I've seen Kutcher and Ferrell in roles where they displayed real talent, but most of the roles they've taken have been in projects that paid very well. And of course, there are always the snobs who can't admit that comedy requires any talent. As Edmund Kean, an English actor regarded in his time as the greatest ever, said on his deathbed, "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard".

I really doubt the "real talent" part but think you are dead on with the "paid very well" part.

Look them up on IMDB for a list of what they've done. Then, find a copy of everything they've dune and watch it. You'll discover that your doubts are wrong.

Jerry Lewis was talented. Take a good look at Buddy Love in "The Nutty Professor". And I consider Jerry Lewis to be a talented comic actor.

Same for Will Ferrell.

Ashton can act, but he seems to be known for morons. I still like him in "Two and a Half Men".
 
Look at the list of actresses who played Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly!

There is an exceptionally long list of actresses who have played Dolly Levi- [Carol] Channing, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Ethel Merman on Broadway. [Barbra] Streisand in the film and many many others! At one time, Elizabeth Taylor was being considered, as well. She WAS excited by the prospect. However, screenwriter and producer Ernest Lehman later decided she wasn't right for the part.

Jerry Lewis was known for playing the imbecile. I think they called it method acting.

Streisand was totally miscast and completely wrong for the part. She was too young for the character and too Jewish. Dolly Gallagher Levi was an Irish-American widow (who had married a Jew).

Add to the list of actresses playing Dolly: Dorothy Lamour, Eve Arden, Ann Sothern, Michele Lee, Alice Faye, Edie Adams, Yvonne De Carlo, Molly Picon, Mary Martin, Ruth Gordon and Shirley Booth (her "Dolly" resembled a certain maid). The musical was written for Ethel Merman, just coming off her turn as Mama Rose.

No wonder the critics panned the movie. At least it did OK at the box office (IMO, would have done better with Channing in it).

Critical reception

Critical reaction was mixed. Vincent Canby in his New York Times review said that the producer and director "merely inflated the faults to elephantine proportions."

Box office

The film grossed $33.2 million at the box office in the United States, earning a theatrical rental (the distributor's share of the box office after deducting the exhibitor's cut) of $15.2 million, ranking it in the top five highest-grossing films of the 1969–1970 season. In total, it earned $26 million in theatrical rentals for Fox, against its $25.335 million production budget. Despite performing well at the box office, it still lost its backers an estimated $10 million.

I saw the movie after I was in the show in high school, in the pit with the orchestra. I don't even remember Barbra's performance but this could be right. While she could do no wrong as a singer, I wasn't always happy with her acting.

My main interest was in the similarities to what we did.
 
The new definition of "insanity:" Going with Streisand instead of Bailey. Get a straight jacket for James Brolin.
 
NBC Sets Aaron Sorkin’s ‘A Few Good Men’ Live Show For 2017

Aaron Sorkin, who created NBC’s Emmy-winning The West Wing, is returning to the network with a live presentation of his Broadway play A Few Good Men, which is slated to air in early 2017. The play premiered on Broadway in 1989, and three years later Sorkin adapted it as a feature film that went on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.

As far back as November 2014 NBC had been talking to Sorkin about mounting a live production of the play. Now the deal is done and Universal Television will produce in association with Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. Television.
