NBC News President Neal Shapiro Resigns

In a story many in the industry have been expecting all Summer, NBC News division President Neal Shapiro has resigned. His deputy, Steve Capus, will succeed Shapiro, at least initially.

This is a Broadcasting and Cable.com story on Shapiro's resignation.

Although NBC's evening newscast maintained it's number-one position in the evening-news ratings despite the transition from Tom Brokaw to Brian Williams, the "Today Show" is now in a neck-and-neck battle with ABC's "Good Morning America" for the top ranking in the early-morning news ratings race. And there is much speculation that sometime in the next few months, "Today" co-hostess Katie Couric will leave both "Today" and NBC to join CBS and become the "long term" anchor of the "CBS Evening News", replacing interim anchor Bob Schieffer.

Couric's departure could vault "GMA" past "Today" to be number-one in the morning news ratings, especially if ABC decides to keep Charles Gibson on "GMA" (personally, I think Elizabeth Vargas will get "World News Tonight", but Gibson, in addition to staying at "GMA", will inherit the anchor desk job for ABC's coverage of breaking news and special events, something he's proven to be very adept at).

Shapiro, MSNBC and a question for J.G.

I wonder if this mean they'll finally get around to straightening out MSNBC. They have been doing a good job with Katrina. Before everyone starts to correct me or ask YES SHAPIRO DID OVERSEE MSNBC.

J.G.: Do you think Drudge spilling the beans about the name changing to NBC News Channel last spring stop them from changing it?

Re: Neal Shapiro And MSNBC

I was asked:

> Do you think (Matt) Drudge spilling the beans about (MSNBC's) name
> changing to NBC News Channel last spring stopped them from
> changing it?

Hard to say. Perhaps there were plans to change the name from MSNBC to NBC News Channel, but they may have been put off first because of the July 7th London Underground bombings and now because of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Given what the news is at the moment, this is the wrong time to rebrand/rename a 24/7 cable news channel. Perhaps a name change may come some months down the line when the news scene is a little more "quiet".

But MSNBC's poor ratings may have been a factor in Shapiro's departure. While ratings of all three national cable news channels have spiked thanks to Katrina, MSNBC's coverage has attracted fewer viewers than either Fox News Channel of CNN.

TODAY Show Blunder

This morning at 8:21 EDT, while GMA was in a commercial break, the TODAY show focused on a family in Florida that had "adopted" a displaced family from New Orleans. It was a 2-camers shot, and you know it required some time and preparation.

As the families were sitting on the couch and floor, the first question to the displaced family was something like, "How did you manage to survive the storm?"

The answer was, "We were already on the road when the storm hit, so we missed it." The interview went downhill from there.

And YODAY is losing ground to GMA? Nahhhh..........

Was Katie Couric doing the interview?

What am I missing? Legit question, though one where it was pretty clear no prep work was done. Legit answer, too. Good reporter would've had a decent follow-up or two. I'm perplexed as to the "blunder"

Pretty much why I'm wondering if Katie was doing the interview... She's probably the WORST interviewer I've ever seen. In fact, I'm willing to bet that every reporter at the station I work at, in market # 134, can conduct an interview better than Katie Couric.

No, Jane Pauley was the WORST, unprepared interviewer ever!

What are the current ratings? Who is in first, second, third? Well, in my opinion, GMA is better than Today.
______________

The producer for that segment should have known that the family from NO had not been in the storm and impressed that on the interviewer. I'm sure that the Today show gang hyped it as being the story of a harrowing escape from certain death... which would make the answer so anticlimactic to be worthy of Weekend Update on SNL.
______________
