In a story many in the industry have been expecting all Summer, NBC News division President Neal Shapiro has resigned. His deputy, Steve Capus, will succeed Shapiro, at least initially.
This is a Broadcasting and Cable.com story on Shapiro's resignation.
Although NBC's evening newscast maintained it's number-one position in the evening-news ratings despite the transition from Tom Brokaw to Brian Williams, the "Today Show" is now in a neck-and-neck battle with ABC's "Good Morning America" for the top ranking in the early-morning news ratings race. And there is much speculation that sometime in the next few months, "Today" co-hostess Katie Couric will leave both "Today" and NBC to join CBS and become the "long term" anchor of the "CBS Evening News", replacing interim anchor Bob Schieffer.
Couric's departure could vault "GMA" past "Today" to be number-one in the morning news ratings, especially if ABC decides to keep Charles Gibson on "GMA" (personally, I think Elizabeth Vargas will get "World News Tonight", but Gibson, in addition to staying at "GMA", will inherit the anchor desk job for ABC's coverage of breaking news and special events, something he's proven to be very adept at).
