NBC Sports to debut highlights show "The 'Lights" on August 13

The cable sports network, NBC Sports Network, is starting up its first daily morning sports highlights show, "The 'Lights" on August 13, a day after the NBC broadcast network will conclude its big two week London Summer Olympics effort.

"The 'Lights," which riffs off of the word "highlights," will air weekday morning in a two hour-programming block, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., a place where many other sports highlight TV programs airs, such as ESPN's big "SportsCenter" franchise.

NBC says it is designed to serve the busy morning schedule of sports fans, in a 20-minute sports report. What's unusual: it will not have an on-camera anchor or set. There will be simultaneous airing of video clips, graphics and voiceovers in delivering scores and information.

7am to 9am makes no sense. The highlight show should be on at night. Most people who are interested in this type of programming are either at work or commuting to work during this time.

They need some Anchors and could start their own Sports News Channel.

I use to love watching NHL On The Fly when they use to let the highlights and commentary teams speak for themselves. They they started having anchors talk over the highlights and I stopped watching.

I really like the format of MLB Network's "Quick Pitch". If this show is going to be anything like it, I think sports fans would prefer it over AM SportsCenter, which is mostly football dribble in the middle of the summer.

@UMFan: The sports fan that wants highlights would be better off just listening to a local sports radio station in the morning. No hosts, a twenty-minute segment airing on a loop... this has to be a temporary plan until they eventually join the other sports networks and find a sports radio show to air the video feed of.

Dan Patrick Radio Show but it's on FSN.
NHL on the Fly is good.
Quick Pitch has a host like last night it was Rizzo and Reynolds.

Being a cable channel, I like to think they picked those hours so that West Coasters are easier to reach. Otherwise, you might have a point.
