How Newsrooms are dealing with the fallout of COVID-19.
TV, in particular, still requires technical and production bodies to broadcast content.
Savannah Guthrie is the latest anchor to be forced into reduced circumstances by the coronavirus.
The “Today” anchor announced that she would be broadcasting from home beginning Wednesday in an Instagram posted Tuesday night. Hoda Kotb will still be live from Studio 1A.
“Hi everybody,” wrote Guthrie, 48. “Well, this will be a first. I’m going to be anchoring TODAY from my house! In an abundance of caution, and to model the super vigilance the CDC has asked of all of us, I’m staying home because I have a mild sore throat and runny nose. This was the advice of NBC’s superb medical team and my bosses. I feel good and am sure I will be back in no time — but during these days, it’s on all of us to be extra cautious and caring of those around us.”
Brian Williams was just interviewing a guest, and ended it by saying that he's in an isolated studio so that he doesn't come in contact with any other people to limit his own exposure to the virus. So it's possible that the in-studio face-to-face interview that we see so often on TV is now on hiatus.
Update NBC News is going to have a special on COVID-19. Now the question here is where will NBC News send Lester Holt and the other staff members to when this special is out.
He was in a smaller studio, isolated from his guests, who each sat at individual tables.
NBC News said on Friday that one of its employees, longtime audio technician Larry Edgeworth, has died after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Larry Edgeworth, a sound technician for NBC News’s Rockefeller Plaza headquarters for the past 25 years, suffered from other health issues, his wife said, according to a memo sent by NBC News President Andrew Lack.
“I’m deeply saddened to tell you that we’ve lost a longtime member of our NBC News family – Larry Edgeworth passed away yesterday,” Lack wrote.
Lack added, “Larry most recently worked in the equipment room on the fifth floor, but prior to that he spent most of his 25 years at NBC News as a skilled audio technician, often traveling to the most remote locations. Many of you were fortunate enough to work with Larry over the years, so you know that he was the guy you wanted by your side no matter where you were.” Lack added that Stacy Brady, executive vice president and general manager of news field and production operations for NBCUniversal, “says he was known as the ‘gentle giant who would give you the shirt off his back.'”
