NBC Wins Second-Half NASCAR Season Away From ESPN & TNT

This is kind of off-topic, but kind of on ...

NBCSN is doing a smart thing in adding NASCAR SCS and NWS racing to its stable of race-related programming. They already have the GNCC (Grand National Cross Country) Motorcycle series as well as the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross series (although I wish they could just broadcast both motos from both classes instead of splitting time with Fuel TV - a Fox-owned entity), and with F1/IndyCar/ARCA they look like what Speed should have/used to look like.

NASCAR just became NBCSN's most mainstream sports property next to the NHL, PGA, and MLS. It's a win for NBC Sports no matter how you slice it.

This is a good deal for NBCSN.. but I doubt Fox was in any mood to pump that much more money into NASCAR - even for the new sports networks. Fox already has a lot of NASCAR for the early part of the season and the ratings are just not what they used to be.

Overall I think NASCAR may need to re-think some of things they've done in recent years in order to draw viewers back to the races.
To wit: I'm not sure the "race for the cup" has really worked out all that well.

I had been a NASCAR fan up until now. Since we don't have NBCsn anywhere I can tune it looks like my weekends will be free now! I wrote NASCAR to tell them so and haven't received any reply. I guess they think being on a low penetration sports network is going to win them more fans.

You can still watch the races over the Internet. Not all the Nationwide events are broadcast but the Sprint Cup events are.

NBCSN is doing a better job getting deals then CBS Sports Network is doing. Wonder why that is. Could one reason be CBSSN is up in the extra sports pack while NBCSN is not.

NBC is leveraging it's prowess with the NFL, I'm guessing, to a better degree than CBS is. Or they just have better negotiators. NBC does have a better cable presence than CBS. Being able to offer so many plaatforms has its appeal.

I just hope the last race of the year is on NBC, not NBCSN since I don't have any cable or satellite. I was extremely mad with ESPN for putting the last race of the year on their network instead of ABC and I am glad they are losing the rights to it.

Noticed today on my one tv where its just plugged into cable that NBCSN the SD is in 16:9 like ESPN networks and the news networks are.

Fox Sports 1 will be up there too in many parts of the country (Denver not included). Fox Sports 2 will likely be up there just about everywhere once launched since it'll replace Fuel TV

Also, Fox College Sports, Fox Soccer Channel & the College Conference nets are there as well

Cheers & 73 ;D

Interesting development:

ESPN and Turner Sports are talking with NASCAR about getting out of their broadcast rights agreement a year early, a move that could allow Fox Sports and NBC Sports Group to become the sport’s broadcasters next year.

It’s unlikely that the four TV companies will be able to reach a deal, sources say. But the fact that these types of talks are occurring is precedent-setting in an industry where live sports rights are held sacred. For at least the past decade, no rights holder has exited a major media agreement with a property early.

ESPN and Turner executives told the series that they are interested in forgoing the final year of their contract. Fox and NBC executives told NASCAR that they are interested in picking up those rights. And sources say NASCAR executives are open to the switch.
