NBC's is typical of the overall problem of radio & TV.

The networks are taking people out of retirement - or at least semi-retirement - because they have nobody younger who they feel is capable of delivering the audience to the buyers. The credibility - or lack of it - is the issue with the younger guys.

Maybe. Name recognition is another. Q-score. It's hard to compete with Brokaw and Rather for name recognition, regardless of what you think about their credibility. When it comes to dealing with advertisers, the older guys are celebrities. The younger ones aren't yet. Same problem with talk radio. Or even music radio. How would you like to replace some of the veterans who've been playing hits on radio for 40 years? Good friggin' luck! So stations stick with the older guys, even thought they cost more.

With many months to come up with a first-show opening that would define his show he bombed badly. Although he occasionally hits one out of the park most of his humor seems to be of the SNL variety. In other words, very similar to that high school play the drama club did. Childish. Not until the duel with Leno did he come up to the level expected of a first rate comedian.

back to late night... i read this on the thread.... couldn't resist... you think Conan's comedy is similar to high school play drama.... so Leno's attack cats skit is "smart comedy" LMAO... again.... reruns of "Flipper" would be more fun to watch than Leno.

Well, as some poster said earlier, it all depends on your individual taste. In my opinion, Conan's humor on Late Night was generally first rate. Was it of the "SNL variety?" OK - I'll accept that if you compare it to the 70s and 80s, when SNL had good writing. Personally, I find Leno's humor sophomoric and obvious. I consider his humor far more "high school" than Conan's. I've never been a Leno fan, and would only tune in his Tonight Show when there was a guest I really wanted to see.

Where we agree is that Conan's Tonight Show was weak. Critics have criticized him for taking the edge off the sharper humor of the 12:35 show, and I think that's accurate. "Bombed badly" is a little strong - but I found myself losing interest after a few weeks.

I only saw Conan's first night hosting the Tonight Show....horrendous. He tried WAY to hard..the show was full of canned, unfunny bits and loads of flop sweat. Of course I never thought he was a good talent to begin with, but that first night was enough to bury any new host. NBC just pinned too much on him...just plain underqualified. And they should have never put him on the Tonight Show while Craig was beating him in the ratings.

Note that I also said, in competing with Leno, Conan's bar wasn't set that high. In other words, neither of these guys reached the stature of a headliner comedian. But Conan's comedy wasn't even up to Leno standards.

YMMV

You keep making the claim and I keep correcting it. Craig was NOT steadily beating him in the ratings. Yes, Craig narrowed the gap; and yes, Craig did beat him for a couple of weeks...but that does not mean he was "beating" Conan in the ratings.

I never said "steadily" Biffstunt, but since late 2008 it was more often than not. I work at an affiliate so I saw the numbers each week. Point being, NBC made Conan Tonight Show host when he was hot and #1 and they thought Leno would fade with younger viewers. Unfortunately stuck to those plans while Leno stayed a dominant #1 and Conan was getting beat by Craig. And considering his Tonight Show ratings, well, they sucked plain and simple.

Nobody's arguing the Tonight Show ratings. But maybe Craig was beating Conan locally more often than not, but that's not true nationally.

Fallon and Ferguson were on the same footing, that might be a more fair comparison than Conan and Letterman in the head to head.
