NBCUniversal to invest heavier in news at O/O's (including KXAS/5)

I thought the move was a "done deal".. Aren't they moving next door to AA? Need to be out of current location by Dec 2012????

NBC doesn't get (or conveniently ignores) the fact that the COL for KXAS/5 is Fort Worth. Moving the studios out of the Broadcast Hill facility would require some sort of CP to allow them to change their COL to Dallas.

OTOH, there is precedent for moving without "permission." KTXS/12 in Sweetwater/Abilene moved its studios from Sweetwater to Abilene many years ago without getting a CP from the FCC. Got in trouble for it, too, as I recall. Official station ID still reads "Sweetwater/Abilene" to this day, although the xmtr is in Merkel. On the rare occasion I drive through Sweetwater, I note that the old KTXS studios are still standing, though long abandoned. There's even a CBS eye still painted on the side of the building, from the days when KTXS was a dual CBS/ABC affiliate.

So I suppose if KXAS decided to move its studios to Dallas and kept its Broadcast Hill facilities for the STL, the most they'd get from the FCC is a slap on the wrist. If they moved whole-hog to Dallas and abandoned 3900 Barnett Street, they might get hit with a fine. Doubt if NBC would notice, frankly, and - well, I was going to make a politically-related statement here, but I won't.

The rules have changed a lot from the old days. A station is allowed to have its studios basically anywhere it puts a signal... regardless of community of license. That's the rule that brought all the rimshot stations to DFW. Once they put a signal over Dallas they could move their studios to Dallas. All the station has to do is notify the FCC about the studio move. They may have to keep their public file in the community of license if its a long way from the studio. But that usually ends up in a desk drawer in someone's office in the COL.

The new studios will still be in Fort Worth.

Well, yes, but barely. They'll be as far east as possible, much like the olden days when KTXQ (nee KFWD) was located near the old Greater Southwest Airport. Even if CentrePort lies on the same land that was once was home to GSIA, somehow it still doesn't seem like Fort Worth. In any event, it's sad to see the end of historic Broadcast Hill.

The new studios will still be in Fort Worth. And NBC's getting tax abatement's from Fort Worth to stay in the city.

http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/06/14/3152607/city-council-briefs-tax-abatement.html

I really need to stay better informed of what my city council is doing. If I'd have known about this nonsense back in June, I'd have urged my councilman to vote no on the abatement. That's over two million dollars that won't be going into city coffers that NBC/Universal can certainly afford to pay.

KXAS/Channel 5 is not like a sports team like the Rangers or Cowboys. If they want to move to Dallas, let 'em. I'm not willing to allow my city to essentially "give" a corporation (any corporation, not just GE/Comcast/NBC/Universal) millions of dollars to stay or come to the area. Somehow, that money's got to be made up, and guess who gets the bill?

Plus, that building at 3900 Barnett Street has been a neighborhood icon for decades. If the city is going to essentially pay two million dollars to NBC/Universal to build their studios at CentrePort, they should pay to find a new use for the old studios. I'd be willing to fund that sort of effort with my tax dollars.
