Neophyte Piers Morgan Exhibits Huge Bravado, Predicts He Will Be "No. 1" On CNN

Neophyte Piers Morgan Exhibits Huge Bravado, Predicts He Will Be "No. 1" On CNN

Maybe Piers Morgan is just talking the talk, or he has a lot of hubris.

As you know, the "America's Got Talent" judge has been confirmed as the new host of CNN's 9 PM slot when Larry King retires.

In recent years, King has traditionally been beaten in the cable news ratings by Fox News' Sean Hannity, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, and even HLN's Joy Behar on some nights. (I believe even CNBC topped CNN in the time slot, either in ratings or just demos, on a night or two, as well.)

So imagine my surprise when Morgan said the following at a conference call this week:

"I didn't join the network to come in second or third or fourth. I want to be first."

Sure. When all 32 NFL football teams start each season, certainly, their mindset is not to simply make the playoffs. Of course, using this analogy, I should point out that these are players with years of football experience behind them.

Piers Morgan does not have any talk show experience on his résumé. How does anybody expect to take him so seriously when he makes such an outlandish statement?

Nobody goes into a new venture they're getting paid to do and says out loud "I'm hoping for the middle of the pack."
I'm not so sure we're supposed to take him seriously. Especially if his performance on "Today Show 4th Hour" is any indication.

That guy makes me gag. He is his #1 fan and supporter and such an egotistical remark is typical of him.

I'd rather watch Rosie O'Donnell scratch her ass than watch him.

Piers is usually among the "100 most annoying people in Britain" when the year-end polls are done. Don't know how he'll do in America.

Because he arguably has talk show experience, along with plenty of overall TV time under his belt?

Dude! I'm gonna have to watch someone slaughter a pig to get that image out of my mind.

Okay... But in England. While I will be quick to admit when I'm wrong, I'm skeptical as to whether or not his talk show appeal will carry over to the U.S., where most folks like myself only know him as a Simon Cowell knockoff on an "American Idol" knockoff.

An open question: Would you watch a talk show if Simon Cowell hosted it? I wouldn't.
