The two guys I thought should have succeeded the number 1 NBC NFL team. They were that good together on TV and Radio. Criqui is still going strong for CBS TV, usually doing Buffalo or Cleveland games. Criqui started at CBS in the late 60s or early 70s. He called Tom Dempseys record breaking field goal for the Saints against the Lions.......

According to Westwood One's website, Marv Albert and Boomer Esiason will indeed call the Westwood One/CBS radio broadcast of Super Bowl XL.

Esiason, as well as Pat Summerall, Kyle Rote Sr., John Brodie, and Bob Trumpy, are the only four broadcasters who have broadcast the Big Game on both radio and television. In the case of Brodie, he worked Super Bowl XIII in 1979 for NBC television, but I thought he was the "number" two analyst for NBC's coverage of the NFL in 1978 (with Dick Enberg; I thought Curt Gowdy and Merlin Olsen were NBC-TV's lead NFL tandem in 1978. Correct me if I'm wrong).

Also interesting was that the tandem of Jim Simpson/George Ratterman (who called Super Bowl I for NBC radio) and the tandem of Don Criqui/Bob Trumpy (who called NBC radio's broadcasts of Super Bowl XX and XXI) were both, at the time they called the Super Bowl on NBC radio, the "number-two" broadcast team for NBC television's coverage of pro football.

Musser was one of the radio & TV voices for the Phillies, along with Harry Kalas & the late Richie Ashburn for most of the 1970's & 1980's and I believe did some TV play-by-play either for the Sixers, or one of the major college basketball teams in Philly.

don't forget about jack buck! in addition to the ton of super bowls he did on radio, he also called super bowl iv for cbs tv with pat summerall and frank gifford by his side at tulane stadium.

actually, there was one other time, which was the broadcast of the 1963 nfl championship game on nbc radio. that game pitted the bears and the giants from a frigid wrigley field.

the nbc tv crew was jack brickhouse and chris schenkel, the nbc radio crew was jim gibbons (who called the redskins for cbs tv in season) and pat summerall (who was the giants analyst for cbs tv in season).

ironically enough, summerall and gibbons would team up as redskins announcers for cbs a few years later.

... "The writers covering the first Super Bowl treated their press credentials like dog tags, assembling in trenches according to their league allegiances — NFL writers over here, AFL scribes to the back of the room.

Two television networks — the NFL on CBS, the AFL brought to you by NBC — televised the game to their respective partisan audiences, with pregame tensions between the technical crews reaching such a fever pitch that a 10-foot chain-link fence had to be erected to separate the feuding camps.

In the winners' locker room, reporters from both networks — Pat Summerall for CBS/the NFL and George Ratterman for NBC/the AFL — had to wrestle over the single microphone they were given to conduct on-air interviews. ...
