Never Mind: via BRW, 1510 to stay sports

http://www.bostonradiowatch.com

The latest...looks like they're sticking with sports!

"Earlier today, Anthony Pepe, WWZN AM 1510's general manager and the host of the "Mouthpiece Boxing Show" on the station, forwarded the following press release to BRW informing that the station's new owner, NYC-based Blackstrap Broadcasting LLC, will be keeping the Zone's current sports format which is a mix of national sports talk from Sporting News Radio network, local college play-by-play broadcasts and niche time-brokered programs. The decision to stick with the current sports format model comes on the heels of Blackstrap's sale announcement on Tuesday(BRW 5/29) which mentioned of its intention to introduce non-English programming geared toward immigrant listeners."

Peter Davidson, May 29:
"“I am pleased that my company will purchase these two great signals. Blackstrap Broadcasting’s mission is to provide a platform and a welcoming home for immigrant communities on the public airwaves...
Immigrants are the source of America’s strength and prosperity and Blackstrap Broadcasting was formed to celebrate, champion and provide mass media access to these newly arrived Americans.”

Peter Davidson, May 31:
“1510 The Zone has been embedded in Boston as a sports station for the last 10 years and we would like to preserve that tradition,Boston is among the greatest sports cities in the country and the demand for sports coverage in the region reflects that."

FLIP FLOP...Did they buy the station in Boston to run programming for immigrants or what? Or are they
still planning to switch formats in a few months or so, but just want to keep their listeners (both of them)
assured that there will be no change, no matter what has been said before...

I think there are listeners... they get quite a few calls from Boston and they aren't Frank from Gloucester nor Dakota nor Mike from Canton nor any of the other nitwits... we've already discussed the fact that they probably have an inside number to call. I've been wondering recently if they get paid for their appearances, as well, since they're so much a part of the shows. I only half jest.

No matter what they say, they bought the stations to make money. If they thought they could broker it to Martians for more money than sports, you would hear programming made by little green men.

BULL! In 2004 Davidson's other company DMG (which owns 100.3 in Providence) bought WXCT 990 in suburban Hartford, Connecticut. He went on record saying he was gonna keep WXCT's news-talk format. The story got picked up by the AP and it was in newspapers as far away from Hartford as The Miami Herald that WXCT was gonna stay news-talk. Fast Forward to May 4, 2004 WXCT is LMA'd to Anda Productions and the station goes Spanish AC playing music from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today. In July 2005 Anda Production's LMA is terminated and the station goes Spanish Tropical progrmmed in-house by DMG. In October '05 they brought back WXCT's GM from 2004 and brought back the talk format in-house. He signed a 2 year LMA in July 2006 to keep the station talk. Unfortuantely there was a clause that if CAB Radio didn't bring in the $$$$$$$$$$$, DMG could revoke the LMA. DMG Revoked the LMA in May 2007 and as of 3:30PM May 10th, WXCT is LMA'd to a group programming Spanish Religion.

>>He went on record saying he was gonna keep WXCT's news-talk format

hmm!
Usually we get a statement of "there are plans at this time to change the format". What made this
interesting is that Davidson came out and said they were going to "immigrant radio". then 24-36
hours or so later the word comes out: no, staying sports. What the heck's going on?
Are advertisers wonding what the station's format is going to be? Did they change their minds?
Or is it going Spanish ANYWAY but they're just telling us this for now...

Seasoned radiophiles like raccoonradio should know exactly what "WE HAVE NO PLANS FOR ANY FORMAT-CHANGE AT THIS TIME" means when said by a soon-to-be new owner......

davidson is a good bs-er. he didn't have anything to put on in place of time-bought sports shows on 1510. he's doing the time buy deal for 1510 with the same russian group which is renting out wsnr. once all the papers are signed, goodbye sports and hello, stoli.
