r

It looks like Hot 104.9 has responded to this by tightening up their playlist pretty drastically and eliminating all golds and most recurrents. They also seem to be leaning rhythmic and have moved a stopset to the top of the hour.

here's their 12 o'clock from today

Taio Cruz - Dynamite
Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
David Guetta ft. Usher - Without You
Cobra Starship - Good Girls Go Bad
GYM CLASS HEROES FT. ADAM LEVINE - STEREO HEARTS
Jay-Z Empire State of Mind
Nicki Minaj - Super Bass
Bad Meets Evil ft. Bruno Mars - Lighters
Lil Wayne - How to Love
Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know It All
ADELE - Someone Like You
Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)

I have a hard time picking up Hot 104.9 in Perry when I visit my grandparents. Hopefully 107.1 comes in better in Perry.

I looked at both stations' coverage area and it appears that WGMY has a slightly better signal over Perry per radio-locator.com. I think it's been a while since Tallahassee had a 100k-watt CHR, or close to it.

I think it's funny how Clear Channel and Cumulus have CHRs that are exactly like many of CBS's Hot ACs

Which Clear Channel CHRs are you referring to?
I can see the resemblance between some Cumulus CHRs and CBS-owned Star 100.7, Mix 106.5, and Q-104.

The "Radio Now"'s (Jacksonville, Milwaukee, and now this one...)

As far as CBS Hot ACs, it's not just the rhythmic-leaning ones - they've pumped up power rotation to 100Xa week (or close to that) at their Hot ACs in Sacramento, Boston, Houston, and a handful more, and all these stations pretty much resemble Cumulus/CC Radio Now CHRs

You're right about the powers, but if I'm not mistaken most of the CBS-owned Hot ACs (the ones in Sacramento, Boston, Houston, Hartford, Orlando) are not as Rhythmic/Pop leaning as Cumulus CHRs. Am I wrong?
Additionally I believe the Cumulus stations are more Current-based, meaning you're likely to hear more Currents per hour (though some of the CBS Hot ACs may play a longer list current titles overall).

The Radio Now station in Milwaukee is great, and the Jax one has greatly improved. I would love for the Cumulus CHRs to move closer to this (in the right markets). The 2 Radio Nows are Adult friendly yet don't all play the same exact currents or the same night show.

Speaking of nights shows (going off on a tangent here) it would be one thing if the Cumulus CHRs aired something like Jackson Blue's Partyplayhouse at night, while a Billy Bush show would sound best in afternoon, in terms of content, and music mix.
The music mix is much more current-based and very hip on Jackson Blue's show, and the presentation kicks ass with a lot of energy and phone interaction.

Yeah slightly - I think it's crazy though that stations spinning their powers 101x a week (i. e. KZZO/Sacramento and others) are being classified by CBS as "Hot AC"

But a Hot AC isn't defined by rotation categories... It's defined by the absence of certain rhythmic CHR hits and a relaxed recurrent rule.

That said, CBS skews most of their AC-type stations towards CHR. A CBS Hot AC is very, very close to an Adult-Leaning CHR, and CBS likes their mainstream AC "Fresh".

CBS's WQAL in Cleveland plays "Super Bass" and "Lighters" - that station's not Hot AC in any form, IMO...

They do have some decent Hot AC's, like KHMX in Houston, KLLC in San Francisco and WOMX in Orlando.

I'm not sure that was the intention when the Hot AC format was created - I know that in the 90s, certain stations were moved from CHR to Hot AC because they didn't play a certain percentage of currents - it had nothing to do with how many rhythmic tracks they were playing

Personally, I feel like if a station is 80% current, and playing its top songs every hour and a half, it's CHR i. e. Contemporary Hit Radio - what differentiates CHR from Hot AC to me is that Hot AC plays a limited number of currents per hour - that's why Canadian stations are classified as Hot AC that play tons of rhythmic tracks - what makes them Hot AC is that their rotations are 50x a week or less

Q-104 Cleveland is still a Hot A/C. you need to study the station beyond what you see on Meidabase. You need to check its music logs on yes.com, and listen online. You may hear 3-4 Recurrents in a row. That's not CHR to me although the station is on the verge of becoming a CHR.

With regards to Canadian Hot A/Cs it depends. There are some stations like Chum 104 Toronto, which are Hot A/C b/c they still play plenty of Retro cuts, and don't necessarily play too many currents back to back.
On the other hand you've got stations like Virgin Radio 96 Montreal or 105.3 kiss FM Ottawa that are on the Hot A/C panel, but are clearly CHRs.
The following Canadian Hot A/Cs should probably be moved over to the Canadian CHR/Pop panel:

Virgin Radio 96 Montreal
105.3 Kiss FM Ottawa
K-100 Saint John
K-94.5 Moncton
Fly 98.3 Kingston
105.7 Sun FM Vernon
99.9 Sun FM Kelowna
97.1 Sun FM Penticton
97.5 The River Kamloops

That's true (I actually can't get on yes.com for some reason - it's been frozen for months)

I was talking about KZZO/Sacramento though - if you look at their Mediabase playlist, there is absolutely no way they have room for more than a handful of recurrents per hour

And there are four or five other CBS Hot ACs that look like they're on its heels

Clear Channel gets a bad rap...probably left over from their KISS days a decade ago. Today I believe their stations are programmed for the market. Using Radio NOW in Milwaukee as an example. I live in the Milwaukee metro area...ever since the decline of HOT AC (with a Chr lean) heritage WKTI there was an apparent hole on the radio landscape here. I have talked to quite few non radio minded people who thought once WKTI left Milwaukee so did top 40...despite there being another Hot AC (WMYX) and another CHR(WXSS). Plus in Kiss fm's case I do not think another Rhythmic leaning CHR or even a normal Rhythmic station could survive in that battle. Kiss is too strong. The way radio now is programmed was the only way to go...it was guaranteed to at the very least not be a disaster.
