New Albuquerque LPFM

The new CP at 91.1 from the New Mexico Black Leadership Council is now KAJZ-LP which would suggest that this will be a jazz format! No signal appears to be on that frequency yet. KAJZ was assigned to 105.1 from November 2002 to April 2004 and 101.7 from April 2004 to October 2005 when it was the second incarnation of smooth jazz "The Horizon". Since this will be a non-com station it could be more traditional jazz or a mix of jazz genres. We should find out soon!

They might have a new problem. KEZF in Grants has abandoned its' old CP and has returned to broadcasting off of Mt. Taylor at 1000 watts. It is now airing Spanish-language programming as "Radio Nueva Vida". Signals from Mt. Taylor can be heard best in the metro in the eastern parts of the city which has higher elevation and is where KAJZ-LP will be broadcasting from. So they could try to put it on the air but can the 100 watt signal overcome the distant KEZF signal without much interference? What's worse is that they may not be able to go anywhere else if 91.1 becomes unusable unless the FCC could make 87.7 or 87.9 available. What else could they do?

Used Radio-Locator (so I could be wrong) and plugged the coordinates into Google Maps. Puts the transmitter on Gibson across from the VA. That is not high at all, as opposed to, say, KMGG-LP

fccdata.org's generated maps, which, honestly, are a better source than Radio-Locator, puts it in the same general area, basically across San Mateo from the Ridgecrest neighborhood. Looks like it's on an unnamed building next to the César Chávez charter school. Will it even reach past I-40 to the north? The 60 dbµ indicated on the fccdata.org map has a bump north of Netherwood Park that gives it a boost along I-25. I still wonder about coverage, though.

Last year, when I was staying near Nob Hill just off Lomas for a week, I could get KMGG in mono but stereo was not consistent. But KMGG is way out east by Tramway Boulevard. Could also get Mt. Taylor stations but in mono only.

BTW, KMGG with it's 100w is running 3 HD sub channels. I'm impressed. I go eat at Copper Canyon on a regular basis so I will keep an eye out since the location is about a block away
