NEW ENGLAND CABLE NEWS - THE OLD NEWS STATION

M

Mercury

Guest
For all Comcast charges its subscribers can't they broadcast NECN in REAL time.

Tuned in Mike Ciardi at 10:45 PM or so pm Sunday night to find out the final in the Red Sox/Chicago game.

Apparently, Mike Ciardi was on tape because although the game had been over for nearly 30 minutes he could only give the score up to the 7th inning which means the tape was well over 30 minutes old.

If WAR breaks out NECN will tell you on a tape delay basis.

Comcast is really irresponsible if they think a stale news loop tape will suffice in this quick changing world. The sports news is just a glaring example of the fraud of NECN. Plus, if you turn on NECN during a Sunday morning or afternoon you will see that they have sold out to infomercials. So much again for them being the CNN or Fox of New England.

Isn't Comcast making enough money to deliver a legitimate 24 hour live New England News package?

Shame on Comcast !

NECN has long used taped loops overnight and on the weekends. Since the Red Sox usually have afternoon or early evening (6p) game that are over by 10p on weekends you don't notice it. Equally annoying is there habit of suddenly selling a half hour for paid programs in the middle of the weekend. It's random, unlike most other stations that mark specific blocks for paid programs.

Again COMCAST is to blame. It is a fraud to call NECN a news station.
But in my opinion they have enough pols in their back pockets not to care.
Just pay your cable ---excessive cable bill, and shut up.
You want real news turn on WBZ Radio.

My favorite is when they interrupt a pre-taped newscast for a special report. You would think that after 10 (?) years, the station would have enough money/resources to produce live newscasts all day.

You would think... but COMCAST has the political clout not to care.
As I said, ' just pay your overly expensive COMCAST Cable bill ... "A month in advance please." and shut up.

Would be a great idea if WBZ Radio just broadcast its all news on cable.

Mercury, I have come to one conclusion...

You hate Comcast. HAHA

I've worked onair and behind the scenes at NECN, and I have seen what they can do.

They have improved in LEAPS AND BOUNDS in the past 5 years, news wise, graphic-wise, and just the whole product in general. They are live for a very good portion of the day during the weekday.

If news has changed, and they are playing a newscast from tape, they will do a live-fix. It's happened several times. They are careful.

As for the weekends, the live broadcasts are fewer and far between(er). This is the same with every station. WHDH isnt live from 4pm to 6:30pm on a Sunday.

For you to say NECN is a hack of a news station is pretty unjust though. They are, far and away, the most successful regional news station. Their documentaries are second to none. They have recently added a SLEW of new shows.

There are infomercials. Yeah. I hate infomercials too. But at 2pm on a Sunday, there is NO NEED FOR A NEWSCAST. Sundays afternoons are SLOW. There is no reason Comcast, or any other company should pay for 24 hour newscasts.

Fox replays their primetime shows from 11pm-2am weekdays. Headline News, FOR YEARS, and STILL replays many of their newscasts. You are being overly critical.

NECN still has some work to do to improve their product, but I think you are selling them WAY too short.

I always ask the same thing about Cox and that absolutely pathetic excuse for a
news station they call the Rhode Island News Channel. At least on NECN you get SOME live news outside of the regular local news time slots on the network stations. On this station you only get live news when Channel 6, the lowest rated news station in Providence, is doing their scheduled live newscasts! What's the point! All it does is repeat the last newscast until the next ABC 6 live newscast comes on. Did they think this would help ABC 6's ratings? Yeah, right. Breaking news? Not here. Are you kidding? You're lucky to have breaking news at all on ABC 6 outside of their regular newscasts unless it comes from ABC. You would think that Cox could afford to have an independent 24 hour local news channel but I guess not. For years I had even asked them for NECN but instead they gave us this crap.

Shame on Cox too!
______________

Not complaining about the on-air or production talent. They all seem very competant and accomplished. But if CONCAST won't support them all is for not.
You just don't have tape repeat loops on an all news cable station. Won't even go there on the informercials; they speak for themselves.

I'm telling you there are taped loops on Headline News. CNN owned. Multi-billion dollar network.

You're way too critical. Way Way...WAY too critical. If they aired 2 hours straight of taped newscast on a weekday, then i would understand...but they dont. Weekends are slow, thus they fill it with specialty programming and infomercials.

Remember, whether it is Comcast, Time Warner, NBC, or any other company, they aren't in this business to inform people...they are in the business to turn a profit.

And CNN Headline News is a dismal failure; that is why they brought on Nancy Grace to do a live show. Furthermore, CNN Headline news is a supplement to CNN. Do not think CNN runs old news tapes.
So, if NECN wants to play with the big boys they should act like one and not cheat the viewers wiht stale, old, rerun news.

NECN ran infomercials on weekends LONG before Comcast was ever in the picture.

As I was part of the original staff at the start of CNNHN --
The first segment is always produced live. The remainder of the half-hour
program may be repeated, often with newer video inserted in subsequent airings.

And you point is..........?

Re: CNNHN taped? live?

People who try to compare NECN to anything CNN does is living in never never land. NECN has a long way to go before it could be compared to the worst days of CNN.

I heard the Weather Channel is on Tape 2AM-5AM EST except for the local weather conditions scrolling. Plus the Weather Channel has it's Documentry Show "Storm Stories", which they rarely preempt. Sometimes I see a message while watching "Storm Stories" that says "Severe Weather and Tornadoes are expected in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Follow Safety Rules"
______________

Actually , technically, they are on Server.

I agree/disagree...

Allow me to respectfully disagree with you here. Graphics wise they may have improved five years ago, but the graphics are still pretty stale.
But who watches news for Graphics?

News-wise, they have gone major leaps and bounds BACKWARDS in the last 5 years. Here is the main context of their news. Boston area news, National News, Weather, Break, National News, Break, Weather... see a trend here. The NE in NECN once stood for "New England", because that is what they used to do, cover NEW ENGLAND news. Now a days they try to be, during news times, a CNN clone, and really have given the cold shoulder to the rest of New England news. There is a lot of news that happens throughout New England, and once upon a time they would cover it. Most had video and such as well. Now it's just relegated to a crawl on the bottom of the screen. While the News Talent is good, the product is mediocre. If NECN ever started airing New England news again, I'd go back to watrhing them.

The only other gripe I have about NECN, really, is the fact that the Master Control can't run a consistantly even commercial break, audio wise. Monitoring a commercial break, if you're not quick to hit the mute button, your TV speakers will blow out from the audio level difference. Although I never recorded it using loudness metering, I can tell there is a real issue with that.

> If news has changed, and they are playing a newscast from

> They are careful.

Sometimes. Sometimes, they sit on the replay while a major event happens without even a word from them. However, most others do the same.

> > As for the weekends, the live broadcasts are fewer and far
> between(er). This is the same with every station. WHDH isnt

Yes, but it is an unfair comparison. WHDH is not a cable news channel. WHDH is network affiliate, and as a Network affiliate there are sports and network obligations to cover from 4p-6p. A better example, and some of this was given below, is that CNN Headline News isn't live from 4pm-6:30 on a sunday. You watch, the "Live" bug doesn't appear till 6p, last I recall.

> For you to say NECN is a hack of a news station is pretty

The documentaries are good, I will definatley agree there. Some of the new shows are decent. I can't stand TV diner, but thats a personal taste thing.

> There are infomercials. Yeah. I hate infomercials too. But

All stations have them, don't listen to that complaint.

> NECN still has some work to do to improve their product, but
> I think you are selling them WAY too short.

His gripe has nothing to do with NECN but with Comcast. He seemed to forget that Comcast is only the PART owner of the station, with Hearst owning the other half.
