Citadel WMAS-AM ( True Oldies AM 1450 )/ Springfield MA has flipped to Sports as WHLL-AM ( 1450 ESPN The Hall ) and airing New York Yankees baseball and a local " Avg. Joe " show in the afternoons.

Too bad that Springfield lost their true oldies station. And, what a waste. The thing is that ESPN radio is a very pale competitor to the WEEI network in New England. Even when they can go toe-to-toe (which they aren't here). In this case, you have an AM graveyarder going after a full-market FM. So this thing promises to be a non-player. I seriously doubt that anyone at Entercom is even giving this a thought.

Losing the oldies was a true waste in this case - except, perhaps, the Yankees coverage, which they could have provided without blowing out the existing format.

I wonder how much they'll like paying ESPN's new fees?

Most of the Springfield-area can get "REAL OLDIES 1250" out of Ware, Massachusetts. It pales in comparison to Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel. Plus REAL OLDIES 1250 has local jox (not sure if they're live or Voice-tracked, but it's better than Scott Shannon Voice-tracked 24/7). Also depending on what type of radio one is using, parts of the Springfield area can get Oldies from WIZZ 1520 out of Greenfield.

Springfield has traditionally listened to oldies on WDRC-FM from Hartford, which has a good signal there, and gets ratings in western MA. It's been the dominant oldies/classic hits station in the Pioneer Valley for years.

With Shannon's True Oldies having updated their playlists lately going into the '70s and dumping most of their '50s songs, there wasn't much difference between what they play and WDRC any more. WDRC is heavy on '60s and '70s (still including early '60s), and still dips back for an occasional '50s hit. WDRC returned to a more traditional oldies approach after an attempt at classic hits didn't work as well a few years ago.

The "Real Oldies" aficionados in the area tune in WARE for all pre-'70s oldies, and it's great that they are locally owned and programmed, but it's a smaller specialty audience, and their signal is tough in Springfield at night.

Good point, I like WDRC-FM and did listen to them when I was around the Springfield area last year. Great playlist with a good share of "wow" songs. However, the signal does get spotty in certain areas around Springfield; particularly north and northwest of the city. As it comes from West Peak in Meriden, it's not as strong there as WTIC-FM or WCCC. It is, however, a "must listen" for me when I am within range.

I always thought that Springfield could support their own CHR or Oldies station on FM, and both WHYN-FM and WMAS-FM have flirted with those formats over the years with specialty shows and pop or oldies leaning AC. Yet for years, both have remained iterations of AC - now one is hot AC (WHYN) and the other is straight on AC (WMAS). Both are pretty dull.

It was only a 2 year (or was it 3) year hiatus. It was only in 06 or 07 that CC LMA'd 640 to WFCR.

All I know is Citdadel's sports station in Providence got it's a** handed to it when EEI came to town.

Now Citadel is trying to return the favor in Springfield? I don't see it happeneing. Good luck though.

When I lived there, I used to listen to them dayside on 790 out of Providence which is decent in Springfield and at night, 880 puts a solid signal into the area.
