It what can only be an appeal to individuals who think "Pops"
is term of endearment of one's father or a type of carbonated beverage it was noted in The Boston Globe that Dr. Phil and his wife will host the nationally televised broadcast of The Boston Pops Esplande Concert on July 4th.
This has to be a new low for the televised 4th of July Boston Pops Concert which under the direction of Keith Lockart has lost much of the distinction it once held under Arthur Fiedler and John Williams. In an attempt to attract a young audience the Boston Pops has traded on its tradition and come up empty handed with talent of limited ability to perform to the standard one would expect from the Boston Symphony's Pops Esplande Orchestra. The traditional 1812 Overture has even been cut to give more time and space to talent that would not have made week one of American Idol.
A Capitol Fourth with Eric Kunzel conducting the National Symphony Orchestra which is broadcast on most PBS stations at the same time has become a much better way to spend two hours than to watch the once cultivated and still fun Boston Pops July 4th concert fall to an MTV standard.
The Boston Globe also reported in the same article that the Boston Pops cannot even secure at this late date name talent to perform. James Taylor had be in negotiations but the organizers of the Pops Concert were so indecisive that he signed on for another concert.
And now, we are left with Dr. Phil. What a disgrace!
Well, here's to a PBS Capitol Fourth.
